Some are also experiencing trauma from witnessing the deaths of other children. The famine we have endured for years, life in tents, all these sufferings have had a toll on my soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4086008\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4086008\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4086008\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Screenshot-2025-11-05-at-10.55.24-AM-1762329462.png?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C483&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"A painting by 16-year-old Yara Youssef Abu Kweik. \" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4086008\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A painting by Yara Youssef Abu Kweik [Screengrab\/Al Jazeera]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While drawing allows Youssef Abu Kweik an outlet to \u201cvent\u201d her feelings, the scenes she draws also cause her to \u201cget flashbacks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Psychologists warned that more than 80 percent of Gaza\u2019s children now display symptoms of severe trauma, including headaches, stomachaches, bone pain, hair loss, vitiligo and weakened immunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe second time I was displaced, I started painting the things that have changed all of us. As it was the second time I was forced out of my home, I started to put it into drawing. The pain and suffering, especially the people who have no shelter to go to, not even tents. I drew a picture of children alongside their parents sleeping on the road, exposed to fire, shells and, above all, to the elements,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4086002\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4086002\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4086002\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Screenshot-2025-11-05-at-10.53.40-AM-1762329438.png?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C497&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"A painting by Yara Youssef Abu Kweik. \" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4086002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A painting by Yara Youssef Abu Kweik [Screengrab\/Al Jazeera]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even before Israel\u2019s war on Gaza began, children in Gaza suffered from significant mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>According to a 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethechildren.net\/news\/after-15-years-blockade-four-out-five-children-gaza-say-they-are-living-depression-grief-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by Save the Children, four out of five children in Gaza were living with depression, grief and fear while more than half struggled with suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF estimated that more than 64,000 children have been killed or injured in Gaza since Israel\u2019s war began after the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks on southern Israel. Israel\u2019s war on Gaza has killed at least 68,858 people and wounded 170,664.<\/p>\n<p>A United States-brokered ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas that came into effect on October 10 has provided little respite to children and adults alike in Gaza due to repeated Israeli strikes and severe restrictions on the flow of food, medical supplies and other aid.<\/p>\n<p>According to Gaza\u2019s Ministry of Health, more than 200 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire took effect.<\/p>\n<p>Despite her suffering and that of those around her, Youssef Abu Kweik is determined to improve her painting skills and \u201csend my message out to the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>That message is clear and succinct: \u201cI represent all the Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip, and on their behalf, I say: Enough is enough.
