More than 70,000 people have fled the city and surrounding areas since the RSF\u2019s takeover, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/iom\/dtm-sudan-flash-alert-al-fasher-al-fasher-town-north-darfur-update-107?e=088d3093a6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses and human rights groups have reported cases of \u201csummary executions\u201d, sexual violence and massacres of civilians.<\/p>\n<p>Nathaniel Raymond, executive director of the Humanitarian Research Lab at Yale\u2019s School of Public Health, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that the RSF had \u201cbegun to dig mass graves and to collect bodies throughout the city\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>UN officials also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/th\/en\/unhcr-escalating-violence-sudan-s-el-fasher-forces-thousands-flee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a>\u00a0this week that thousands of people are believed to be trapped in el-Fasher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The ruinous civil war broke out in 2023, when a power struggle between the RSF and the SAF prompted fighting in the capital, Khartoum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Since then, the RSF has taken control of more than a third of the country in a conflict that has killed tens of thousands and displaced 12 million, nearly a quarter of its population, becoming the world\u2019s largest humanitarian crisis, according to the UN.<\/p>\n<p>Sudan\u2019s Defence Minister Hassan Kabroun said on Tuesday that SAF would press on with its fight against the RSF after the country\u2019s Security and Defence Council met to discuss a proposal from the United States for a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reports of RSF attack on army-held el-Obeid emerge as paramilitary group on the verge of launching an offensive on the key city.
