Additionally, 179 individuals who were in prison have also been released.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Venezuela\u2019s interim President Delcy Rodriguez signed the amnesty legislation into law after it was unanimously adopted by the National Assembly, which authorities said is intended to ease political tensions, promote reconciliation and accelerate the release of political prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>During its signing, Rodriguez said the law showed that the country\u2019s political leaders were \u201cletting go of a little intolerance and opening new avenues for politics in Venezuela\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition figures have criticised the amnesty, which appears to include carve-outs for some offences previously used by authorities to target former President Nicolas Maduro\u2019s political opponents.<\/p>\n<p>Critics say the law explicitly does not apply to those prosecuted for \u201cpromoting\u201d or \u201cfacilitating \u2026 armed or forceful actions\u201d by foreign actors against Venezuela\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p>The law also excludes amnesty for members of the security forces convicted of terrorism-related charges.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of detainees had already been granted conditional release by Rodriguez\u2019s government since the deadly US raid that led to the abduction of Maduro last month.<\/p>\n<p>United Nations human rights experts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2026\/02\/venezuelas-amnesty-law-must-apply-all-unlawfully-prosecuted-victims-and-be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">welcomed<\/a> the amnesty with \u201ccaution\u201d, stressing that it must apply to all victims of unlawful prosecution and be embedded in a comprehensive transitional justice process consistent with international standards.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Venezuelans have been jailed in recent years over plots, real or imagined, to overthrow the government of Maduro, who was flown to New York after his abduction by the US military.<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela-based prisoners\u2019 rights group Foro Penal said on Tuesday that it has verified only 91 \u201cpolitical releases\u201d since the amnesty law took effect on February 20.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation added that it has requested a review of 232 cases currently excluded from the amnesty, and that nearly 600 people remain in detention.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Venezuela\u2019s National Assembly says thousands of people have regained freedom under a new amnesty law.
