jeopardised sensitive information.<\/p>\n<p>The National Prosecutors\u2019 Office announced the charges against Piotr P, former head of Poland\u2019s ABW internal security agency, and Maciej Materka, later named himself in a social media post condemning the action.<\/p>\n<p>In a press release, the prosecutor\u2019s office said the men \u201cdid not have the required IT security accreditation\u201d for the software, and used it \u201cdespite being aware of the risk of compromising\u201d the agency\u2019s activities, including \u201csecret\u201d or \u201ctop-secret\u201d information.<\/p>\n<p>Each faces up to three years in prison for allegedly failing in their official duties. The prosecutors said both men denied the alleged acts and \u201crefused to give explanations\u201d during questioning.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on X, Materka said it was his duty to provide officers \u201cwith the necessary and best possible tools\u201d for their work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll operational activities carried out during my leadership of the SKW were undertaken exclusively on the basis of decisions and court approvals required by law,\u201d he said, adding he \u201cserved Poland with an impeccable record\u201d for 24 years.<\/p>\n<p>Other officials in Poland also face charges over the use of the Pegasus spy system.<\/p>\n<p>Former Justice Minister and Attorney General Zbigniew Ziobro, who was in office from 2015 to 2023, faces up to 25 years in prison on abuse of power and other charges \u2013 including using funds meant for crime victims to buy Pegasus spyware, allegedly to monitor political opponents.<\/p>\n<p>The spyware, created by the Israeli cyber-arms company NSO Group and licensed to foreign government agencies, is a highly advanced hacking and surveillance tool that can operate covertly.<\/p>\n<p>It can infiltrate a target\u2019s mobile phone and harvest personal and location data, as well as control the phone\u2019s microphones and cameras without the user\u2019s knowledge.\u00a0Some of the information Pegasus has access to includes photos, web searches, passwords, call logs, communications and social media posts.<\/p>\n<p>It has been accused of being used against journalists and activists around the world, including in Jordan and Serbia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former officials face up to three years in prison if convicted for failing in their duties.
