aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>US President Donald Trump has said his administration\u2019s war against Iran \u201csuccessfully knocked out\u201d the country\u2019s air force and navy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re doing very well,\u201d Trump said on Tuesday, during a news conference at the White House with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz before their meeting.<\/p>\n<section They have no air detection \u2013 that\u2019s been knocked out,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s comments came on the fourth day of US-Israeli strikes on Iran as Tehran closed the Strait of Hormuz and continued its retaliatory missile and drone attacks on US and allied targets across the Gulf region.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"had-a-feeling\">\u2018Had a feeling\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Trump said he had ordered the attack against Iran on Saturday because he \u201chad a feeling\u201d that Iran would strike first as negotiations over its nuclear programme stalled.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if Israel might have \u201cforced\u201d his hand on attacking Iran, Trump responded, \u201cNo, actually, I might have forced their hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said that the US attacked Iran because it knew Israel was about to bomb that country, and because the Trump administration believed that Iran would then strike US facilities in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting from Washington, DC, Al Jazeera\u2019s Kimberly Halkett said Trump\u2019s comments are \u201cgoing to have a tremendous place in the US because the US president doesn\u2019t have the power to declare war unless there is a threat to the US.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe US president has not offered any evidence of that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"oil-prices-rise\">Oil prices rise<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, Merz, who is in Washington, DC to discuss a trade deal with the US as well as Russia\u2019s ongoing war on Ukraine, voiced support for the US-Israeli war on Iran. But he said he hoped it would end soon, since it was hurting the global economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is, of course, damaging our economies. This is true for the oil prices, and this is true for the gas prices, as well. So, that\u2019s the reason why we all hope that this war will come to an end as soon as possible,\u201d Merz told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said Germany had been \u201chelping out\u201d by allowing US forces to access certain bases, and drew a sharp contrast to the actions of two other European countries: the United Kingdom and Spain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re letting us land in certain areas, and we appreciate it, and they\u2019re just making it comfortable. We\u2019re not asking them to put boots on the ground,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>Merz said Germany and the US shared a desire to get rid of Iran\u2019s current regime and said he would discuss with Trump what happened once the \u2060military operation ended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are on the same page in terms of getting this terrible regime in Iran away, and we will talk about the day after,\u201d Merz said.<\/p>\n<p>The war in Iran is politically sensitive for Merz, who faces potential backlash at home over Germany\u2019s support for the US-Israeli operation.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, he expressed no criticism of the US air strikes, but stopped short of endorsing an operation which Trump\u2019s critics have said was undertaken \u200cwithout sufficient explanation and the required legal backing in international law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trump contradicts Rubio by saying US attacked Iran because \u2018he had a feeling\u2019 Tehran would attack Washington first.
