aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has said that an \u201cimprovised explosive device\u201d was thrown during a protest outside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s home, with two men taken into custody.<\/p>\n<p>The statement on Sunday came a day after the incident outside the mayor\u2019s residence, Gracie Mansion, where far-right, anti-Muslim demonstrators, led by activist Jake Lang, clashed with counterprotesters.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span item thrown by a man at the protest was \u201cnot a hoax device or a smoke bomb\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is, in fact, an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death,\u201d she said, adding that further analysis would be conducted on the device, as well as a second device left near the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Tisch said that two men, identified as Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, were arrested at the scene. The FBI has also joined the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Police had earlier said that Balat was among a group of counterprotesters when he threw the smoking device at a barrier near police. It did not explode.<\/p>\n<p>The device contained nuts, bolts and screws, as well as a so-called \u201chobby fuse\u201d, according to police.<\/p>\n<p>Balat dropped a second device in the street as he fled, police said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"never-acceptable\">\u2018Never acceptable\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>In a statement on Sunday, Mamdani condemned Lang\u2019s protest, but said the following violence was \u201ceven more disturbing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cViolence at a protest is never acceptable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lang, a far-right activist who was arrested for storming the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, and pardoned by President Donald Trump last year, called Saturday\u2019s protest in opposition to what he has described as the \u201cIslamification\u201d of New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani is the first Muslim mayor of the city, which is estimated to be home to up to 1 million Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>In his statement, the mayor described Lang as a \u201cwhite supremacist\u201d, adding that \u201csuch hate has no place in New York City\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two people have been arrested after the device was thrown, as far-right demonstrators clashed with counterprotesters.
