<\/p>\nListen to this article<\/span>\u00a0|\u00a0<\/span>4 mins<\/span><\/p>\n<\/button>info<\/title><path class=\"icon-main-color\" d=\"M12 0a12 12 0 1 0 0 24 12 12 0 0 0 0-24Zm-.226 3.225a2.039 2.039 0 0 1 2.155 1.924v.193a1.998 1.998 0 0 1-2.155 2.149 2.029 2.029 0 0 1-2.146-2.15 2.039 2.039 0 0 1 1.955-2.122h.193l-.002.006Zm3.227 15.525a.75.75 0 0 1-.752.75H9.75a.75.75 0 0 1-.75-.75v-1.5a.75.75 0 0 1 .752-.75h.748V12h-.75a.75.75 0 0 1-.75-.75v-1.5a.75.75 0 0 1 .752-.751h3a.75.75 0 0 1 .75.752v6.75h.75a.75.75 0 0 1 .75.749L15 18.75Z\"\/><\/svg><\/button><\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p><strong>London, United Kingdom \u2013<\/strong> As anti-Muslim hate crimes rise in Britain, so too does biased coverage of Muslims in the media, a new study suggests.<\/p>\n<p>The Centre for Media Monitoring, a nonprofit organisation that examines how Muslims and Islam are portrayed in the media, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/cfmm.org.uk\/resource\/the-state-of-british-media-2025-reporting-on-muslims-and-islam\/\">report<\/a> released on Monday that of about 40,000 articles it assessed from 30 outlets, 70 percent associated Muslims or Islam with negative aspects or behaviours.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 4 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>\u201cAs the largest study of its kind ever conducted in the UK, this report presents deeply concerning evidence of structural bias in how Muslims are portrayed in the UK press,\u201d said Rizwana Hamid, the group\u2019s director.<\/p>\n<p>The report said almost half of the articles published about Muslims in the UK, or about 20,000, contained a \u201chigh degree of bias\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The data point to a \u201csystemic problem within our media ecosystem\u201d, Hamid said. \u201cWhen entire communities are repeatedly framed through lenses of suspicion or threat, it inevitably shapes public attitudes, political debate and the everyday lives of British Muslims\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>News organisations that address the concerns and interests of right-wing voters in Britain were more likely to produce biased coverage about Muslims, the report found.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation named The Spectator magazine and GB News television channel as the \u201cworst across all five bias categories\u201d \u2013 negative coverage, generalisations, misrepresentations, contextual omissions and problematic headlines \u2013 as well as newspapers such as The Telegraph, Jewish Chronicle, Daily Express, The Sun, Daily Mail and The Times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarmful coverage is not incidental among these outlets,\u201d the report read.<\/p>\n<p>At the other end of the scale, the outlets least likely to produce biased coverage maligning Muslims and their faith were: ITV, the Metro newspaper, BBC, the PA news agency, The Guardian, The Associated Press, London Evening Standard and Sky News.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"rise-of-racism-with-echoes-of-the-past\">Rise of racism with echoes of the past<\/h2>\n<p>The study was released as Muslims across Britain face increasing hostility, in part due to the rising popularity of hard-right public figures and swelling anti-immigration sentiment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExtensive research has shown correlations between negative portrayals of Muslims and rising hate crime, employment discrimination, and support for restrictive policies,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>In October, the UK reported that religious hate crimes against Muslims rose 19 percent during the year ending in March 2025 compared with the previous period. The Home Office said anti-Muslim hate crimes spiked after the 2024 Southport mass stabbing at a girls dance class, which agitators on social media had blamed on a fictitious Muslim migrant.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, mosques have been targeted, and British Muslims as well as other ethnic minority groups have reported a growing sense of unease and insecurity as a sense of nationalism grows in line with the growth of the far-right Reform UK party.<\/p>\n<p>Observers said the kind of racism returning to the UK has echoes of the discrimination witnessed in the 1970s and 1980s. Prime Minister Keir Starmer told ITV late last year that it was \u201ctearing our country apart\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Centre for Media Monitoring said in one example it studied, right-wing media amplified a claim by United States President Donald Trump that London was governed by \u201cSharia law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Trump in September told the United Nations General Assembly: \u201cI look at London, where you have a terrible mayor, terrible, terrible mayor, and it\u2019s been changed. It\u2019s been so changed. \u2026 Now they want to go to Sharia law. But you are in a different country.
