aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>New Delhi says two Indian-flagged tankers carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) bound for ports in the country\u2019s west have crossed the Strait of Hormuz in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey crossed the Strait of Hormuz early morning safely and are en route to India,\u201d Rajesh Kumar Sinha, special secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and carries one-fifth of global oil supplies since the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran late last month.<\/p>\n<p>The war has prompted a critical shortage of cooking gas in India, a country with longstanding ties to Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Also on Saturday, Iran\u2019s ambassador to India, Mohammad \u2060Fathali, said Tehran had allowed some Indian vessels to pass the Strait of Hormuz in a rare exception to the blockade that has disrupted global \u200cenergy supplies.<\/p>\n<p>Fathali, speaking at a conclave organised by the India Today media group in \u2060New Delhi, did not confirm the number of vessels that have been provided safe passage.<\/p>\n<p>About 20 percent of global oil and seaborne liquefied natural \u200cgas (LNG) \u200cis traded through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said it will not permit any supplies for the US or its allies to leave the strait, but India had sought exemptions.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said he had spoken \u200cto Iran\u2019s President Masoud Pezeshkian and discussed the transit of goods and energy from the Gulf.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Indian government invoked emergency powers and directed refiners to maximise production of LPG to prevent a shortage of the cooking fuel. It cut sales to \u2060industry to avoid a shortage for its 333 million homes with LPG connections.<\/p>\n<p>India has also urged LPG users to avoid panic buying of cylinders and shift to piped natural gas where possible.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s \u2060Ministry \u2060of Petroleum and Natural Gas said \u2060on Saturday that it \u2060has barred consumers with piped natural gas (PNG) connections from \u200cretaining, obtaining or refilling domestic LPG cylinders under an amended supply order.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2060amendment also prohibits \u2060government oil companies from providing LPG \u2060connections or refills \u2060to consumers \u2060who already have PNG connections, the ministry \u200csaid in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iran\u2019s envoy to New Delhi says Tehran allowed some Indian vessels to pass the Strait in a rare exception to the blockade.
