Mexico says it has no information on such an incident and signals no disruption to any bilateral ties.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p class=\"s5\"><strong>Tehran, Iran \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Iran has branded accusations from the United States and Israel that it was hatching a plot to assassinate the latter\u2019s ambassador to Mexico as \u201cridiculous\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei told reporters on Monday that Tehran believes Israel is trying to damage its \u201cfriendly relations\u201d with other countries through an \u201cabsurd allegation\u201d.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p class=\"s5\">Unnamed US and Israeli senior officials told news outlets late last week that the Quds Force, the external operations arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), plotted to assassinate Israeli envoy Einat Kranz Neiger beginning in late 2024 and remaining active into mid-2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">The plot was contained and does not pose a current threat, the officials said, without offering any evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">Israel\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs then released a statement thanking the Mexican security and law enforcement services for \u201cthwarting a terrorist network directed by Iran that sought to attack Israel\u2019s ambassador to Mexico\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">\u201cThe Israeli security and intelligence community will continue to work tirelessly, in full cooperation with security and intelligence agencies around the world, to thwart terrorist threats from Iran and its proxies against Israeli and Jewish targets worldwide,\u201d a ministry spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">However, Mexico\u2019s foreign relations and security ministries have since denied knowledge of such an incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">In a joint statement, they said they have \u201cno report with respect to a supposed attempt against the ambassador of Israel in Mexico\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The statement emphasised that Mexico has not initiated disruption to diplomatic ties with any country.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s embassy in Mexico on Monday called the accusation \u201ca media intervention and a great lie\u201d and said it considers \u201cbetraying Mexico\u2019s interests to be betraying our own\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Baghaei said: \u201cOur embassy stated that we found this allegation so absurd and ridiculous that we did not even think it required an official response from the spokesperson.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"attacks-in-australia\">Attacks in Australia<\/h2>\n<p class=\"s5\">Baghaei was quick to point out that Israel has previously made similar accusations against Iran, citing attacks on Jewish synagogues in Australia in late 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">That appeared to be a reference to a testimony given by the New South Wales Police Force to the upper house of the Australian parliament in early October, which presented the result of an investigation into suspected Iranian links to 14 incidents of attacks on synagogues, graffiti, firebombings, and attacks on cars and homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">\u201cThe NSW Police Force has nil holdings in relation to foreign agents perpetrating these incidents,\u201d a police representative told lawmakers at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">\u201cDespite official statements by Australian police rejecting any connection to Iran, Israel has continued to insist on Tehran\u2019s involvement,\u201d Baghaei said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">However, in late August, Australia accused Iran of directing two \u201canti-Semitic\u201d arson attacks in the cities of Sydney and Melbourne and gave Tehran\u2019s ambassador seven days to leave the country, the first such expulsion since World War II.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">Canberra also designated the IRGC a \u201cterrorist organisation\u201d and withdrew its diplomats from Tehran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">At the time, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation had gathered credible evidence that Iran \u201corchestrated\u201d last year\u2019s attacks on a kosher restaurant and a synagogue, but did not release the evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">Australia\u2019s move to cut ties with Tehran and proscribe the IRGC came shortly after the US and its European allies condemned Iran for what they called a surge in attempts by Iranian intelligence to \u201ckill, kidnap, and harass people in Europe and North America in clear violation of our sovereignty\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iran blasts \u2018ridiculous\u2019 claim from US and Israel.
