Prime Minister Meloni is the first EU and NATO country leader to visit the region since the war began.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Published On 4 Apr 2026<\/span>4 Apr 2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has met Qatar\u2019s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha to discuss the energy crisis due to the ongoing United States and Israeli war on Iran.<\/p>\n Meloni met the Qatari leader on Saturday in Doha, the second stop on a regional tour that began in Saudi Arabia the previous day and continues with a visit to the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n list of 4 items<\/span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n The leaders \u201ctackled energy issues \u2026 and discussed possible measures to mitigate the shocks suffered\u201d, according to a statement from her office.<\/p>\n Meloni told the Qatari leader that Rome was ready to \u201ccontribute to the rehabilitation of Qatari energy infrastructure, which is essential to energy security on a global scale\u201d, the statement added.<\/p>\n Italy is highly dependent on energy imports and is concerned about rising energy prices that have resulted from Iran\u2019s effective blocking of the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway through which some 20 percent of global oil and liquified natural gas transits.<\/p>\n The Qatari emir\u2019s office said in a statement that both sides had \u201cstressed the need to work towards de-escalation\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd prioritise political dialogue and diplomacy as the best way to contain the current crisis in the Middle East and its repercussions on energy and supply chains, and to safeguard energy security in the region,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n \u201cThey also reviewed bilateral cooperation between the two countries and ways to support and develop it in various fields, particularly in the economy and energy,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n Since the beginning of the war at the end of February, Iran has targeted US and Israeli targets in the region, in addition to targeting Gulf countries, including Qatar.<\/p>\n Iran has targeted Qatar\u2019s energy installations, including a missile strike on Ras Laffan Industrial City, the country\u2019s main gas facility, that caused \u201csignificant damage\u201d. Doha says the attacks will\u00a0affect its natural gas export capacity.<\/p>\n An Italian government source told the AFP news agency that Meloni\u2019s trip to the Gulf aimed to \u201cstrengthen relations with these countries and repeat Italy\u2019s support against Iranian attacks\u201d.<\/p>\n The source added that the region was a \u201ccrucial source of oil and gas for Italy\u201d and that Meloni is the first leader of a European Union or NATO country to travel to the region since the war broke out.<\/p>\n After meeting the Qatari emir, Meloni travelled to the United Arab Emirates, where she was received by President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Prime Minister Meloni is the first EU and NATO country leader to visit the region since the war began.
