French maritime authorities said on Wednesday that 102 people had been rescued in two separate operations while trying to cross the channel. However, the journey is frequently perilous, with overcrowded boats and unpredictable conditions putting lives at risk.<\/p>\n The issue has also intensified political debate across Europe.
