You found the answer. And you followed through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Magyar said the results \u2013 projecting his party winning a two-thirds majority in parliament \u2013 represented a historic mandate and pledged to unite all Hungarians. \u201cIn the \u2060history of democratic Hungary, this \u2060many people \u2060have never voted before, and no single party has \u200cever received such a strong mandate \u200cas \u200cTisza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reporting from the victory party, Al Jazeera\u2019s Step Vaessen described scenes of jubilation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBudapest has absolutely exploded into celebrations,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s all over for Viktor Orban after 16 years. They can barely believe it, but it\u2019s absolutely happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One voter, Daniel Hernandez-Kontler, said he expected Magyar to \u201cbuild bridges\u201d rather than \u201cdivide Hungary\u201d. Speaking to Al Jazeera, he said he expected \u201ca more human Hungary that is for everyone, not just the Fidesz sympathisers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4487116\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4487116\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4487116\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AFP__20260412__A7K37WG__v2__HighRes__TopshotHungaryPoliticsVote-1776028347.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban waves to supporters at the Balna centre in Budapest during Hungary's general election on April 12, 2026\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4487116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Viktor Orban waves to supporters in Budapest [Attila Kisbenedek\/AFP]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For his part, Orban told his followers that he had \u201ccongratulated the victorious party\u201d after a \u201cpainful\u201d but \u201cclear\u201d result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2060responsibility and possibility \u2060of governing was not given to us,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are going to serve the Hungarian nation and our homeland from opposition as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera\u2019s Vaessen said that \u201cthe comfortable two-thirds majority\u201d that Magyar\u2019s party was projected to win was \u201cvery important\u201d, as it would allow it to amend Hungary\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a big change for Hungary because for the past 16 years, Fidesz has had a comfortable majority in parliament and Orban could govern as he pleased,\u201d Gergeley Rejnai, a Hungarian analyst at the Centre for Fair Political Analysis, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, it\u2019s going to be completely flipped,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"in-the-mainstream-of-the-eu\">\u2018In the mainstream of the EU\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The National Election Office said the turnout by 6:30pm (16:30 GMT) was more than 77 percent, a record number in any election in Hungary\u2019s post-Communist history.<\/p>\n<p>Orban\u2019s defeat will have significant implications not only for Hungary, but for the European Union, Ukraine and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>It will likely spell an end to Hungary\u2019s adversarial role inside the EU, possibly opening the way for a 90 billion euro ($105bn) loan to war-battered Ukraine, which had been blocked by Orban.<\/p>\n<p>Rejnai said Hungary is expected to align more closely with Western European allies, putting itself \u201cin the mainstream of the European Union\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4486943\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4486943\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-4486943 size-arc-image-770\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AP26102700910530-1776023214.jpg?resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"People react in the streets after the announcement of partial results of Hungary's parliamentary elections in Budapest on April 12, 2026. \" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4486943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">People celebrate in the streets after the announcement of partial results of the Hungarian parliamentary elections in Budapest [Denes Erdos\/AP]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Defeat for Orban could also mean the eventual release of EU funds to Hungary that the bloc had suspended due to what Brussels said was Orban\u2019s erosion of democratic standards.<\/p>\n<p>Orban\u2019s exit would also deprive Russian President Vladimir Putin of his main ally in the EU and send shockwaves through Western right-wing circles, including US President Donald Trump\u2019s MAGA followers.<\/p>\n<p>US Vice President JD Vance had visited Hungary earlier this week to rally with Orban, attacking the alleged interference in Hungary of Brussels \u201cbureaucrats\u201d, while Trump had promised to bring US \u201ceconomic might\u201d to Hungary if Orban\u2019s party secured victory.<\/p>\n<p>In Hungary, a Tisza victory could open the way for reforms that the party says would aim to combat corruption and restore the independence of the judiciary and other institutions.<\/p>\n<p>However, the extent of such reforms will depend on whether Tisza secures the two-thirds constitutional majority it would need to reverse much of Orban\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n<p>Orban sought to cast Sunday\u2019s election as a choice between \u201cwar and peace\u201d.
