Baby food brand HiPP recalls products after Austrian police say a tampered jar contained rodent poison.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Published On 20 Apr 2026<\/span>20 Apr 2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Baby food manufacturer HiPP has issued a product recall in Austria after authorities reported the presence of rat poison in one of the company\u2019s jars.<\/p>\n HiPP said on Sunday that it had pulled all baby food sold at stores operating under the SPAR umbrella in Austria, including outlets of EUROSPAR, INTERSPAR and Maximarkt.<\/p>\n list of 4 items<\/span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n The Swiss company, which bills itself as the world\u2019s top organic baby food brand, said the recall was not due to quality problems in its production processes.<\/p>\n \u201cThe jars left our\u00a0HiPP\u00a0facility in perfect condition.\u00a0The recall is related to a criminal act currently under investigation by the authorities,\u201d\u00a0the company said in a statement\u00a0published\u00a0on its website.<\/p>\n The Sachseln-based firm added that it was in \u201cclose and continuous contact\u201d with investigating authorities.<\/p>\n \u201cDue to the ongoing investigations, we can share only confirmed information relevant to consumer safety,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n The move comes after police in Austria\u2019s eastern state of Burgenland urged the public to exercise caution following the discovery of a tampered jar of \u201cCarrots with Potatoes\u201d baby food.<\/p>\n \u201cWith the involvement of the Federal Criminal Police Office, a sample of the seized product was examined on Saturday afternoon and tested positive for rat poison,\u201d the Burgenland State Criminal Police Office said in a statement.<\/p>\n Police said the jar\u00a0was\u00a0reported by a customer and had not\u00a0been\u00a0consumed.<\/p>\n HiPP\u00a0baby food\u00a0seized by authorities in the\u00a0Czech Republic and Slovakia was\u00a0also found to\u00a0contain\u00a0an\u00a0unspecified\u00a0\u201ctoxic additive\u201d following laboratory testing, the Burgenland police said.<\/p>\n Police advised the public to avoid jars that have a white sticker with a red circle on the bottom of the jar, a damaged lid, a missing safety seal, or an unusual smell.<\/p>\n The Czech Republic\u2019s Ministry of Health said on Sunday that police had seized two contaminated jars of baby food in the eastern city of Brno.<\/p>\n Officials were working to assess the risk to local consumers and had implemented \u201cinspection and preventive measures\u201d, the ministry said.<\/p>\n The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety urged anyone experiencing symptoms of poisoning to consult a doctor.<\/p>\n Symptoms of ingesting rat poison, which interferes with the body\u2019s use of vitamin K, include bleeding, extreme weakness and paleness, and typically take two to five days to appear, according to the food safety agency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Baby food brand HiPP recalls products after Austrian police say a tampered jar contained rodent poison.
