{"id":19664,"date":"2026-04-20T18:49:04","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T17:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=19664"},"modified":"2026-04-20T18:49:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T17:49:04","slug":"palestinians-not-welcome-as-israel-marks-memorial-day-israel-palestine-conflict-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=19664","title":{"rendered":"Palestinians not welcome as Israel marks Memorial Day | Israel-Palestine conflict News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>With the sounding of a siren at 8pm on Monday, Israel begins the commemoration of Memorial Day, remembering soldiers killed since the establishment of the first Jewish settlements in Palestine in 1860, through Israel\u2019s many wars with its neighbours and attacks on Palestinians, up to those who died enacting its genocide in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>The day is observed every year on the 4th of Iyar on the Hebrew calendar \u2013 corresponding this year to the evening of April 20 and the day of April 21. Traffic stops, silences are observed, wreaths are laid, places of entertainment are closed, and, on television, normal programming is suspended \u2013 replaced by the names of Israelis killed in the 166 years since settlement is regarded as having begun \u2013 88 years before the Nakba, and the ethnic cleansing of 750,000 Palestinians on Israel\u2019s official founding as a state.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 4 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>This year, the list will include the names of 25,644 soldiers as well as 5,313 civilians. Not featured anywhere will be details of the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians killed over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>In last year\u2019s commemoration, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu went to pains to cast the events of the day against the background of the Hamas-led attack of October 7, 2023, which killed 1,139 Israelis, without reference to the more than 72,000 Palestinians Israel went on to kill in Gaza during its two-year war on the besieged enclave.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4507669\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4507669\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4507669\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/INTERACTIVE-Palestinians-and-Israelis-killed-1776684637.png?quality=80\" alt=\"INTERACTIVE Palestinians and Israelis killed-1776684637\" data-interactive=\"true\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4507669\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Al Jazeera)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFrom disintegrating Rafah to the high peak of Mount Hermon [Syria\u2019s Jabal al-Sheikh], our sons and daughters are not willing to accept what the monsters did when they attacked us,\u201d Netanyahu said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are determined to do justice with the perpetrators of the massacre and the horrors, and even in these very moments, they endanger themselves to create the conditions that will allow the return of all of our hostages and victory over our enemies,\u201d Netanyahu added, maintaining a narrative of sacrifice in the face of existential threat that has characterised much of his political life.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, according to critics, those narratives of sacrifice and threats have consolidated into a nationalism with little patience for questions or dissent, one that has underpinned Israel\u2019s violent expansion into the occupied West Bank and cast aside any concerns over international law or norms in Gaza.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"contested-past\">Contested past<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cMemorial Day is a particularly tough time for those demonstrating against the wars,\u201d 18-year-old Allon Rivner, one of a growing number of young Israelis refusing to serve in the military, told Al Jazeera from northern Israel. \u201cThere\u2019s an expectation that the day should only be about the Israeli dead, so people don\u2019t like it when you try to talk about Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m currently volunteering and have been asked to talk to some younger people today about what Memorial Day means,\u201d Rivner explained, saying that he had already been criticised over his plans to include Palestinian deaths among the Israeli ones in his presentation. \u201cThat\u2019s just one example. There are more. I think people just don\u2019t like the idea that these soldiers might have died for nothing. Look, my grandmother\u2019s brother was killed in the 1973 war, and I have no problem saying he died in vain. In the past, governments have attempted to ban Palestinians from attending the joint Israeli-Palestinian memorial ceremonies, while activists from across Israel\u2019s growing network of right-wing groups have threatened such ceremonies and those who attend.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the event has been reduced to being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfpeace.org\/memorial-ceremony\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">held online.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Palestinians, this day is a tragedy. This is why we have a very different vision of it,\u201c said Hassan Jabareen, the founder of Palestinian legal rights organisation Adalah. \u201cFor Israelis, it\u2019s a day of remembering their soldiers, but for Palestinians, Memorial Day and the day that follows it, Independence Day, just bring back memories of the Nakba.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"radicalised-future\">Radicalised future<\/h2>\n<p>Complaints are increasing that Memorial Day is becoming more politicised as Israel\u2019s far-right and settler communities play an increasingly vocal role in government. During a pre-Memorial Day speech in the occupied West Bank, Israel\u2019s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich warned that the fighting would only halt after \u201chundreds of thousands\u201d of Palestinians had been successfully displaced from Gaza and that Syria had been partitioned.<\/p>\n<p>These were not the goals of a specific government, but rather constitute the \u201cconsensus of a people who desire life\u201d and \u201cthe final picture of a campaign that was forced upon us\u201d, Smotrich said of the series of conflicts that Israel has embarked on since 2023, which have directly and indirectly killed hundreds of thousands of people and now \u2013 with the consequences of the war with Iran \u2013 threaten the global economy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3958411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3958411\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3958411\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2024-10-21T151946Z_1177072695_RC22PAAW9WDJ_RTRMADP_3_ISRAEL-PALESTINIANS-GAZA-RESETTLEMENT_cropped-1758141186.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Ahmad Hasaballah\/Getty Images\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3958411\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich speaks while a conference on the resettlement of the Gaza Strip takes place, at an unspecified location in southern Israel, October 21, 2024 [File: Tomer Appelbaum\/Reuters]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been getting more right wing and more political since the current coalition came to power in 2022,\u201d said Nimrod Flashenberg, a spokesperson for Mesarvot, an association supporting Israelis who, like Rivner, refuse military service. \u201cIt\u2019s always been fraught, but it\u2019s definitely getting more so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flashenberg noted that officials have chosen to honour Rabbi Avraham Zarbiv as a torchlighter in this year\u2019s Independence Day ceremony, as someone who has contributed to Israel.
