The US and Iran trade threats as tensions escalate between the countries before their two-week ceasefire ends.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Published On 21 Apr 2026<\/span>21 Apr 2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has said Iran is \u201cprepared to reveal new cards on the battlefield\u201d after United States President Donald Trump threatened Tehran with \u201cproblems like they\u2019ve never seen before\u201d if the two-week ceasefire expires on Wednesday without a deal.<\/p>\n The war of words comes as the second round of US-Iran peace talks scheduled to take place this week in Pakistan remains in limbo after the US seized an Iranian-flagged vessel near the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, angering Iranian authorities and provoking another surge in global oil prices.<\/p>\n list of 3 items<\/span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n Reporting from Tehran, Al Jazeera\u2019s Tohid Asadi said, \u201cThere is no official confirmation on whether Iran is going to take part in talks in Islamabad.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe know that Iran has tried to keep the door ajar to diplomacy, so there is still a possibility,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n In an overnight post on X, Ghalibaf expressed anger at Trump for \u201cimposing a siege and violating the ceasefire\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cWe do not accept negotiations under the shadow of threats, and in the past two weeks, we have prepared to reveal new cards on the battlefield,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n This was a \u201cmixed message\u201d, according to Asadi, \u201csaying Iran is ready for negotiations but not under terms imposed by the US\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThere will be no easy negotiations, if, of course, they even happen, as there are still several complicated sticking points.
