{"id":19892,"date":"2026-04-22T10:41:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T09:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=19892"},"modified":"2026-04-22T10:41:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T09:41:06","slug":"russia-strikes-ukraines-odesa-port-kills-railway-worker-in-zaporizhia-russia-ukraine-war-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=19892","title":{"rendered":"Russia strikes Ukraine\u2019s Odesa port, kills railway worker in Zaporizhia | Russia-Ukraine war News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-dates\">\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Published On 22 Apr 2026<\/span><span aria-hidden=\"true\">22 Apr 2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>Russian drones have attacked Ukraine\u2019s main Black Sea port in the southern city of Odesa and a railway in the region of Zaporizhia, killing a train driver, according to Ukraine\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba.<\/p>\n<p>The overnight attacks damaged the infrastructure of the Odesa \u2060\u2060port, including berths, warehouses, railway infrastructure and \u200c\u200cport operators\u2019 facilities, Kuleba said in a statement on X on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>The attack \u2060\u2060on a sorting yard at the Zaporizhia-Live station in \u2060\u2060the southern Zaporizhia region killed an \u200c\u200cassistant train driver, he said, adding that the main driver was injured and is receiving treatment at a hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Kuleba said this is \u201canother proof of terrorism, Russia is at war against peaceful people, against those who were simply doing their job and keeping the country moving\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Russia also launched several drones and missiles on a flight path near the disused Chornobyl nuclear plant, elevating the risk of a significant accident, according to Ukraine\u2019s top state prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as Ukraine prepares to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1986 Chornobyl disaster on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said 35 Kinzhals \u2013 Russian air-launched ballistic missiles \u2013 were detected \u2060\u2060at various distances within about 20km (12 miles) of the Chornobyl facility or the Khmelnytskyi plant. Of those, 18 passed within about 20km of both sites on the same flight, he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch launches cannot be explained by any military considerations. It is evident that the flights over the nuclear facilities are carried out solely for the purpose of intimidation and terror,\u201d Kravchenko said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the Russian military was likely using Chornobyl as an attack route for drones to try to bypass dense areas of Ukrainian air defence coverage.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine, which \u200c\u200chas limited air defences, concentrates them near populated areas and important infrastructure to maximise their utility against Russian attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s army said it downed 189 out of 215 Russian drones overnight, adding that 24 drones were recorded hitting 13 locations, as well as falling debris at six locations, while many drones remain in the airspace.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4512707\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4512707\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4512707\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/afp_69e885b0054e-1776846256.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"In this grab from a handout footage released by the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations on April 22, 2026, rescuers work at the scene of a heavily damaged apartment building following a drone attack in Syzran. (Photo by Handout \/ RUSSIAN MINISTRY OF EMERGENCY SITUATIONS \/ AFP) \/ RESTRICTED TO EDITORIAL USE - MANDATORY CREDIT &quot;AFP PHOTO \/ SOURCE \/ RUSSIAN MINISTRY OF EMERGENCY SITUATIONS&quot; - HANDOUT - NO MARKETING NO ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS - DISTRIBUTED AS A SERVICE TO CLIENTS\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4512707\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rescuers work at the scene of a heavily damaged apartment building following a drone attack in Syzran, Russia [Handout\/Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations via AFP]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported that 155 Ukrainian drones were destroyed overnight, according to local media.<\/p>\n<p>Also overnight in Russia, a Ukrainian drone attack killed two people in the central Russian city of Syzran, home to one of the country\u2019s top air force schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo people \u2013 an adult woman and a child \u2013 have died in Syzran following an attack by an enemy drone,\u201d Samara Region Governor Vyacheslav Fedorischev said on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Photos provided by the Russian Ministry of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Disaster Relief showed a four-storey apartment building partly collapsed, with rescuers working in the debris.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"failed-diplomacy\">Failed diplomacy<\/h2>\n<p>Recent months have seen several rounds of United States-brokered negotiations\u00a0fail\u00a0to bring the warring parties closer to an agreement to stop the fighting, triggered by Russia\u2019s February 2022 invasion.<\/p>\n<p>The process has stalled further since the outbreak of the war in the Middle East, with Washington\u2019s attention having shifted towards Iran.<\/p>\n<p>But even before the US-Israel war on Iran, progress towards a peace deal in Ukraine had been slow, due to differences over the issue of territory.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has proposed freezing the conflict along the current front lines.<\/p>\n<p>But Russia has rejected this, saying it wants the whole of the Donetsk region despite it being partly controlled by Ukraine \u2013 a demand Kyiv says is unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in comments made on Tuesday that were cleared for release on Wednesday that Kyiv has asked Turkiye to host a meeting between Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe asked the Turks about it, we asked some other \u2060capitals,\u201d he said, adding that Ukraine would be ready to consider \u200cany place other than Belarus or Russia for a meeting with Putin, which Zelenskyy has long sought to try to hasten a resolution of the more than four-year war.<\/p>\n<p>Belarus is a close ally of Russia and allowed Moscow to use Belarusian \u2060territory to launch its full-scale \u2060invasion of Ukraine in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Sybiha did not say how Ankara had responded to the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe addressed the Turks specifically,\u201d he said. \u201cBut if another \u2060capital, besides Moscow and Belarus, organises such a meeting, we will go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u2060Kremlin previously said it is \u2060willing to host Zelenskyy in Moscow, where the Ukrainian leader has said he will not go.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Published On 22 Apr 202622 Apr 2026 Russian drones have attacked Ukraine\u2019s main Black Sea port in the southern city of Odesa and a railway in the region of Zaporizhia, killing a train driver, according to Ukraine\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba.
