United States President Donald Trump has been evacuated from the venue of the White House correspondents\u2019 dinner in Washington, DC, after shots were fired outside the event.<\/p>\n
Trump was rushed out of the Washington Hilton hotel on Saturday evening after gunshots were heard outside the ballroom where the president and the first lady had been seated before the start of the annual media gala.<\/p>\n
Trump, first lady Melania Trump, and Trump\u2019s Cabinet were unharmed in the attack.<\/p>\n
In a news conference after the incident, Trump said a man armed with multiple weapons had charged a security checkpoint, and was \u201ctaken down\u201d by the Secret Service.<\/p>\n
Trump described the suspect as \u201cvery sick person\u201d and a \u201cthug\u201d who had attacked the US Constitution.<\/p>\n
Trump said a Secret Service officer was shot in the attack, but he was saved by his bulletproof vest and was \u201cdoing great.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAs you know, this is not the first time in the past couple of years that our republic has been attacked by a would-be assassin who sought to kill,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn light of this evening\u2019s events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our difference peacefully,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
Asked by a reporter if he believed he was the target of the attack, Trump responded: \u201cI guess\u201d.<\/p>\n The Secret Service said the shooting had occurred at a \u201cscreening area\u201d and that one individual was in custody.<\/p>\n \u201cThe condition of those involved is not yet known, and law enforcement is actively assessing the situation,\u201d the agency said.<\/p>\n Shortly before his news conference, Trump posted images on Truth Social appearing to show the suspect face down on the ground, as well as a clip of surveillance video showing a man running past security personnel, who then drew their guns and opened fire.<\/p>\n FBI Director Kash Patel said that officers had begun examining the suspect\u2019s background and urged members of the public with any relevant information to come forward.<\/p>\n \u201cNo piece of information is too small, no piece of information is inadequate. We will evaluate it all,\u201d Patel said.<\/p>\n Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said the suspect had been transported to a local hospital for evaluation.<\/span><\/p>\n Multiple US media outlets identified the suspected gunman as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California.<\/p>\n Trump, a ferocious critic of journalists who has sued multiple media outlets, had been due to speak at the annual celebration of press freedom for the first time as president.<\/p>\n Footage from the dinner\u2019s venue showed Trump and attendees taking cover behind their table after shots rang out, as people yelled \u201cGet down!\u201d and \u201cStay down!\u201d<\/p>\n Trump was then rushed away from the scene by Secret Service agents, after which heavily armed agents surrounded the table.<\/p>\n Al Jazeera producer Chris Sheridan said he heard what he believed to be five gunshots outside the ballroom.<\/p>\n \u201cWe could smell the powder. We immediately dove to the ground. It was directly behind me,\u201d Sheridan said.<\/p>\n \u201cI couldn\u2019t tell how many feet away, but it was definitely behind the doors to the entrance to the ballroom.\u201d<\/p>\n Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was the first world leader to react to the attack, expressing her relief that Trump and the first lady were unharmed.<\/p>\n \u201cWe send our respect,\u201d she said in a post on X. \u201cViolence should never be the way.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump has been targeted in multiple assassination attempts, including a near-miss shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, in 2024.<\/p>\n Thomas Crooks fired eight shots at Trump during a campaign rally event, killing one bystander and lightly wounding the then-candidate\u2019s right ear, before being shot dead by the Secret Service.<\/p>\n \u201cToday we need levels of security that probably nobody has ever seen before,\u201d Trump said at Saturday\u2019s news conference, before pledging to reschedule the event.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re not going to cancel things out because we can\u2019t do that,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n \u201cWe wanted to stay tonight. I will tell you, I fought like hell to stay\u2026 But it was protocol.
