Lula has been seeking a deal since the White House slapped a 50 percent tariff on Brazilian exports in July due to legal pressure on Trump ally and former President Jair Bolsonaro.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>Lula described his meeting with Trump on Sunday, on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, as \u201csurprisingly good\u201d, and said he received assurance that a deal can be reached soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe guaranteed to me that we will reach an agreement,\u201d Lula told a news conference. \u201cI am very confident that in a few days we will reach a solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later, as he made his way to Japan, Trump also signalled that a deal is likely following \u201ca great meeting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll see what happens,\u201d the US president told reporters. \u201cThey\u2019d like to do a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A deal could avert punitive US tariffs after months of animosity between Lula and Trump, whose relationship has warmed since an unscheduled meeting at the United Nations in New York earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration imposed a tariff of 50 percent on Brazilian products in July. It linked the decision to what the US president described as a \u201cwitch hunt\u201d against Bolsonaro.<\/p>\n<p>Lula said that during the meeting in Malaysia he had presented Trump with a document outlining arguments against the tariff hike.<\/p>\n<p>While the document acknowledged the US has the right to impose the measures, its move was based on \u201cmistaken information\u201d, the Brazilian president said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump did not commit to suspending the tariff hikes, but also did not raise any conditions during their talks, Lula said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m convinced that in a few days we\u2019ll have a definitive solution, you know, between the United States and Brazil, so that life can continue well and happily,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe guaranteed to me that we will reach an agreement,\u201d Lula said, speaking through an interpreter.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate interview with reporters, Brazil\u2019s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira described the meeting as \u201cvery positive\u201d and \u201cvery productive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe meeting was very positive, and the final outcome is excellent. President Trump stated that he will instruct his team to begin a process, a period of bilateral negotiations,\u201d Vieira added.<\/p>\n<p>Lula has previously labelled the US tariff a \u201cmistake\u201d, citing a $410bn US trade surplus with Brazil over the past 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>He has also noted that far-right political figure Bolsonaro, who has been\u00a0sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempting a coup after losing the 2022 presidential election, had been given a fair trial, and that his case should not factor in their trade negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBolsonaro is part of the past now in Brazilian history,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brazilian president expects \u2018definitive solution\u2019 in the coming days over tariffs raised by US over Bolsonaro jailing.
