{"id":20900,"date":"2026-04-30T04:41:05","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T03:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=20900"},"modified":"2026-04-30T04:41:05","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T03:41:05","slug":"trump-admin-probe-into-abc-amid-kimmel-row-sparks-us-free-speech-concerns-donald-trump-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=20900","title":{"rendered":"Trump admin probe into ABC amid Kimmel row sparks US free speech concerns | Donald Trump News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>President Donald Trump\u2019s critics and free speech advocates in the United States are decrying a decision by his administration to review the broadcast licences of several ABC channels, calling the move \u201cunconstitutional\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin:0px;padding:0px\">The probe by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), announced on Tuesday, followed Trump and his wife, Melania, calling for the firing of ABC host Jimmy Kimmel over a joke he told last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>\u201cThe FCC\u2019s unconstitutional threats against ABC are the latest confirmation that Chairman Brendan Carr has weaponised what should be an independent agency in service of Donald Trump\u2019s personal political agenda,\u201d Clayton Weimers, executive director of Reporters Without Borders in North America, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FCC has no authority to revoke ABC\u2019s licences just because the president can\u2019t take a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FCC said it launched the investigation into the eight local ABC channels, compelling them to file for early licence renewal, over diversity measures that amount to possible \u201cunlawful discrimination\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But critics have underscored the timing of the review amid the Kimmel controversy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMust be a total coincidence that the FCC launched this probe right after Jimmy Kimmel told another joke Trump didn\u2019t like,\u201d US Senator Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat, wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FCC can try to dress this up however they want, but this is just another flagrant attempt to silence Trump critics &amp; stifle free speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International USA also accused the FCC of using authoritarian tactics. \u201cThe agency must start taking its responsibility to respect freedom of the press and freedom of expression seriously,\u201d the rights group said in a statement.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ted-cruz-denounces-review\">Ted Cruz denounces review<\/h2>\n<p>The FCC decision sparked rare Republican criticism of the Trump administration by US Senator Ted Cruz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not government\u2019s job to censor speech, and I do not believe the FCC should operate as the speech police,\u201d Cruz told the outlet Punchbowl News.<\/p>\n<p>Days earlier, the White House had berated Kimmel as the Trumps called for his termination after a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Association gala dinner in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<p>Kimmel had made a joke before the gala that Trump and his supporters had pushed to link to the shooting incident, which prosecutors said targeted the US president.<\/p>\n<p>At an \u201calternative\u201d White House correspondents\u2019 dinner on his show on Thursday, Kimmel said: \u201cOur first lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Kimmel dismissed the outrage over the joke, saying that it \u201cobviously\u201d was not a call to violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It] was a joke about their age difference and the look of joy we see on her face every time they\u2019re together. It was a very light roast joke,\u201d he said on his Jimmy Kimmel Live! show.<\/p>\n<p>Kimmel later latched on to a comment that Trump himself had made about his own age.<\/p>\n<p>During a speech welcoming Great Britain\u2019s King Charles on Tuesday, the US president told his wife that they \u201cwon\u2019t be able to match\u201d his parents\u2019 record of 63 years of marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Kimmel aired Trump\u2019s joke on his Tuesday night show and said, \u201cWait a minute. Did he just make a joke about his death? My god. He should be fired for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"disney-responds\">Disney responds<\/h2>\n<p>This is not the first time Trump and his allies have targeted Kimmel.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, ABC briefly suspended Kimmel after the FCC threatened to take action against the network over commentary by the comedian suggesting that the killer of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk may have been a Republican.<\/p>\n<p>Kimmel subsequently returned to his show after an outcry from free speech advocates.<\/p>\n<p>ABC has not taken action against Kimmel this time around despite Trump\u2019s calls for his firing.<\/p>\n<p>Disney, ABC\u2019s parent company, said its stations \u201chave a long record of operating in full compliance with FCC rules and serving their local communities with trusted news, emergency information, and public\u2011interest programming\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are confident that record demonstrates our continued qualifications as licensees under the Communications Act and the First Amendment and are prepared to show that through the appropriate legal channels,\u201d a spokesperson for Disney told several US news outlets on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur focus remains, as always, on serving viewers in the local communities where our stations operate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to revoke the broadcast licence of existing channels is likely to face legal and administrative challenges, turning into a years-long process.<\/p>\n<p>The last time the FCC succeeded in revoking a broadcasting licence over a station\u2019s content was in 1969 \u2013 a local TV channel in Mississippi that was accused of discriminating against African Americans during the civil rights movement.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"egregious-assault\">\u2018Egregious assault\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Democratic FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez said the agency\u2019s move against ABC is \u201cunprecedented\u201d, \u201cunlawful\u201d and \u201cbound to fail\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the most egregious assault on the First Amendment that we have seen from this FCC,\u201d Gomez told CNN.<\/p>\n<p>The First Amendment of the US Constitution bans the government from prohibiting or \u201cabridging\u201d free speech.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation against ABC on Tuesday coincided with federal prosecutors filing criminal charges against former FBI director James Comey over a social media post.<\/p>\n<p>Comey had shared an image of seashells spelling out \u201c8647\u201d in May of last year; \u201c86\u201d is slang for getting rid of or discarding something, and Trump is the 47th US president.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department accused Comey \u2013 a vocal critic of Trump \u2013 of \u201cknowingly and willfully\u201d making \u201ca threat to take the life of, and to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told CBS News on Wednesday that the charges were \u201cpositively not\u201d politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>As a candidate, Trump vowed to \u201crestore free speech\u201d.
