{"id":21113,"date":"2026-05-01T18:21:06","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T17:21:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=21113"},"modified":"2026-05-01T18:21:06","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T17:21:06","slug":"cricket-club-bans-social-media-comments-to-protect-players-mental-health-cricket-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=21113","title":{"rendered":"Cricket club bans social media comments to protect players\u2019 mental health | Cricket News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead\"><em>English basement county, Kent, are led by former international Adam Hollioake, who is concerned for players\u2019 well being.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-dates\">\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Published On 1 May 2026<\/span><span aria-hidden=\"true\">1 May 2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>The English cricket club Kent has suspended comments on their official social media accounts, with head coach Adam Hollioake suggesting players\u2019 mental health could be damaged by stinging criticism.<\/p>\n<p>Kent have made a bad start to the season and are currently at the foot of the second and bottom division of the County Championship following three matches.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 4 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>Their form has led to some cutting online comments from frustrated Kent fans.<\/p>\n<p>Hollioake, in a statement released before Kent\u2019s latest game against Derbyshire, which began at Canterbury on Friday, accepted the team\u2019s performances had not been \u201canywhere near the standards we expect of ourselves\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But Hollioake, a close friend of former Surrey and England teammate Graham Thorpe, who took his own life in 2024, said he had a \u201cduty of care\u201d to protect the Kent squad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout my career in cricket as a player and a coach, I have had to deal with a lot, that\u2019s no secret,\u201d said Hollioake, whose younger brother Ben, also an England all-rounder, was killed in a car crash back in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Hollioake was also close to former England batsman Robin Smith, who struggled with alcoholism before his death late last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen in recent times, two players and friends that I played alongside for England, go down a bad path in terms of mental health, and I\u2019ve lost both of them,\u201d the 54-year-old added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s part of my job, and my duty of care, to make sure that we don\u2019t see that again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a professional cricket department, alongside our media team, we\u2019ve decided as one that we will be suspending commenting on our official Kent Cricket social media accounts for the time being.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has not been a decision that we\u2019ve taken lightly, and we are in no means stopping people voicing their opinions, but to align with our short-term strategy to allow players and staff to think and play with freedom and clarity, we feel it is a necessary one.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>English basement county, Kent, are led by former international Adam Hollioake, who is concerned for players\u2019 well being.
