PIF said on Thursday that it would cut funding of LIV Golf at the close of the 2026 \u200bseason.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Published On 1 May 2026<\/span>1 May 2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Manager Eddie Howe says that Newcastle United\u2019s Saudi Arabian owners remained as committed as ever to \u2060the club\u2019s success, even \u2060as their Public Investment Fund prepares to cut ties with the LIV Golf series.<\/p>\n PIF, which spent more than $5 billion on LIV Golf since it launched in \u20602022, said on Thursday that it would cut funding at the close of the 2026 season, leaving the breakaway circuit scrambling for new backers.<\/p>\n list of 4 items<\/span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n The sovereign wealth fund, chaired by Saudi Crown \u2060Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is involved in several other sports and acquired Newcastle in October 2021.<\/p>\n Asked about meeting with PIF this week, Howe told reporters on Friday: \u201cThe owners and representatives of PIF were over, and it was constructive, good meetings, and I was a small part of that.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s always constructive because \u200cthey clearly care so much about the football club,\u201d the English manager added, speaking ahead of a home match with Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.<\/p>\n \u201cThe long-term planning that is clearly going on, on a number of levels, it\u2019s exciting times ahead for the club, regardless of what happens short term\u2026<\/p>\n The desire is unchanged, to try and get to the top of the Premier League, to try and win as many trophies consistently as possible. \u2060I don\u2019t think, while PIF are our owners, or part owners, majority \u2060owners, that will change.\u201d<\/p>\n In its statement announcing it was cutting funding to LIV Golf, PIF added that it remained committed to deploying capital internationally in line with its investment strategy, \u201cincluding current and future investments in various sports as \u2060a priority sector\u201d.<\/p>\n Newcastle enjoyed some success in their first few seasons under Saudi ownership, twice qualifying for the Champions League and winning the \u2060League Cup last year.<\/p>\n However, they have struggled this season and \u2060are 14th in the Premier League standings after four straight defeats, leading to questions over Howe\u2019s future at the club.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve never needed clarity in my head, in the sense that I\u2019m here, I\u2019m working, and I\u2019m committed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cA \u200cfootball club has to do what a football club has to do. The football club needs to see we are going in the right direction and there\u2019s a positive feeling and \u200cfighting \u200con all fronts.<\/p>\n You can talk as much as you want, but the proof is in how the team performs.
