The agreement set tariffs on most goods at 15 percent, lower than the 30 percent Trump had previously threatened.<\/p>\n In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused the EU of \u201cnot complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal\u201d, without providing further details.<\/p>\n Trump added that he \u201cfully understood and agreed that, if they produce Cars and Trucks in U.S.A. Plants, there will be NO TARIFF\u201d.<\/p>\n A spokesman for the European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, rejected the bloc was somehow not in compliance.<\/p>\n \u201cWe \u2060remain fully committed \u2060to a predictable, mutually beneficial transatlantic relationship,\u201d the spokesperson said, adding the commission \u201cwill keep our options open to protect \u200cEU \u200cinterests\u201d if Trump does not honour the pre-existing deal.<\/p>\n \u2060The \u2060president of Germany\u2019s VDA auto association, Hildegard Mueller, meanwhile, \u2060urged the US and \u2060EU to honour \u200cthe existing trade agreement and to quickly resolve the issue.<\/p>\n Mueller said the cost of \u2060additional tariffs would \u2060be enormous and would likely impact US consumers.<\/p>\n The US-EU deal, dubbed the Turnberry Agreement after Trump\u2019s golf course in Scotland, had already been questioned after the US Supreme Court ruled that Trump lacked the authority to declare a national emergency to justify many of his tariffs.<\/p>\n The ruling lowered the ceiling on EU tariffs to 10 percent.<\/p>\n Still, both sides had appeared committed to the agreement prior to Trump\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n The EU had said it expected the bilateral deal would save European automakers about 500 to 600 million euros ($587m to $704m) per month.<\/p>\n Trump said the new tariff rate would go into effect next week.<\/p>\n The US president launched his aggressive tariff campaign last year, framing the move as a hard reset to boost domestic industries.<\/p>\n Experts have said progress towards that goal has been largely muted, while critics have noted the tariff fees have been footed by US businesses, which then pass the costs to consumers.<\/p>\n Following a court order, the Trump administration was expected to soon\u00a0begin issuing the first of an estimated $166 billion in tariff refunds to companies that directly paid the duties.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n US president says EU \u2018not complying\u2019 with current trade deal, launches new tariffs to begin next week.
