United States President Donald Trump says the US Navy is acting \u201clike pirates\u201d as he described an operation about seizing a ship amid the blockade of Iranian ports.<\/p>\n

But we\u2019re not playing games.\u201d<\/p>\n After the US and Israel attacked Iran on February \u200c28, \u2060Tehran retaliated with strikes on Israel and the Gulf states that host US bases.<\/p>\n Iran also blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway through which 20 percent of global oil and gas passes.<\/p>\n A ceasefire between the US and Iran came into effect on April 8, but days later, Trump imposed a blockade of Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz on April 13, as negotiations to end the war, mediated by Pakistan, continue.<\/p>\n Trump said on Friday he was \u201cnot satisfied\u201d with Iran\u2019s latest peace proposal to end the war. He said he was uncertain whether a deal would be reached, warning that he would \u201cblast them away\u201d if negotiations failed.<\/p>\n Reporting from Tehran, Al Jazeera\u2019s Resul Serdar said Iran\u2019s military headquarters has released a statement, saying a resumption of the war was likely \u201cas evidence shows the US is not committed\u201d to any agreement.<\/p>\n \u201cThat is the assessment and reaction in Tehran. The Iranians believe they have shown enough flexibility before the war during the negotiations, the talks held in Islamabad, and then during the ceasefire,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cBut they\u2019re saying they haven\u2019t seen the same approach from the US, as each time Iran has eased its demands, while the Americans have become more aggressive.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Iran\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said in a post on X that the Americans have an \u201cundeniable right and the solemn duty\u201d to demand accountability from the Trump administration over the US-Israel \u201cwar of choice\u201d on Iran.<\/p>\n The war is \u201ca clear, unprovoked act of aggression\u201d, and the US public should challenge the government for \u201cwaging this illegal war against the nation of Iran and for all the atrocities perpetrated\u201d, Baghaei said.<\/p>\n Alluding to mounting criticism of the war within the US, Baghaei also posted a video of US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand saying at a recent Senate hearing: \u201cWe did not have any evidence that Iran intended to imminently attack this country in any way, shape or form.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump faced a May 1 deadline under the 1973 War Powers Resolution to secure authorisation of the war on Iran from the US Congress. The resolution, which states that Congress must declare a war or authorise use of force against another country within 60 days, is now set to pass without action.<\/p>\n Douglas Silliman, a former US ambassador to Kuwait and Iraq, told Al Jazeera Trump wants to undermine the legal authority of Congress to weigh in at all on the war.<\/p>\n \u201cTo my reading of the law, from 60 days when a conflict involving US forces starts, a president must go to the Congress to continue,\u201d Silliman said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe problem is it\u2019s never really been fully implemented and \u2026 the administration is redefining the timeline of the war to say that they don\u2019t have to do this,\u201d he said. \u201cI think they will continue to find excuses \u2026 not to approach Congress until they absolutely have to.\u201d<\/p>\n Silliman said Trump \u201cdoesn\u2019t want to be seen as asking for permission for doing something that he believes he can do on his own authority\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cHe thinks that as commander-in-chief, this entire law and the concept that he must go to the Congress is unconstitutional.
