{"id":2133,"date":"2025-11-14T12:46:29","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T12:46:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=2133"},"modified":"2025-11-14T12:46:29","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T12:46:29","slug":"rights-groups-decry-tunisias-injustice-crackdown-on-activists-civil-rights-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=2133","title":{"rendered":"Rights groups decry Tunisia\u2019s \u2018injustice\u2019, crackdown on activists | Civil Rights News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>International NGOs Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have decried a sharp decline in civil liberties and a pervading \u201cinjustice\u201d in Tunisia since President Kais Saied came to power in 2019, as authorities escalate their crackdown on the opposition, activists and foreign nongovernmental organisations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTunisian authorities have increasingly escalated their crackdown on human rights defenders and independent non-governmental organizations (NGOs) through arbitrary arrests, detention, asset freezes, bank restrictions and court-ordered suspensions, all under the pretext of fighting \u2018suspicious\u2019 foreign funding and shielding \u2018national interests\u2019,\u201d Amnesty International said in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>Tunisia\u2019s crackdown on civil society has reached an unprecedented level, according to Amnesty, as six NGO workers and human rights defenders from the Tunisian Council for Refugees are \u201cbeing criminally prosecuted on charges solely related to their legitimate work supporting refugees and asylum seekers\u201d. The trial\u2019s opening session, initially scheduled for October 16, has been adjourned to November 24.<\/p>\n<p>It is a long way from the heady days of the Arab Spring in 2011, when Tunisia appeared to be the only country to emerge relatively unscathed in the initial years that followed with a bona fide democracy in full flow.<\/p>\n<p>A sweeping power grab in July 2021, when he dissolved parliament and expanded executive power so he could rule by decree, saw Saied jail many of his critics. That decree was later enshrined in a new constitution \u2013 ratified by a widely boycotted 2022 referendum \u2013 while media figures and lawyers critical of Saied have also been prosecuted and detained under a harsh \u201cfake news\u201d law enacted the same year.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"entire-case-has-been-a-masquerade\">\u2018Entire case has been a masquerade\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Within the past four months, Tunisia has temporarily suspended the activities of at least 14 Tunisian and international NGOs, said Amnesty, including the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women and the World Organisation against Torture.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals have been similarly targeted.<\/p>\n<p>Human Rights Watch said in a statement on Friday that Tunis\u2019s Court of Appeal will hear on November 17 the appeal of more than 30 people \u201cunjustly sentenced to heavy prison terms in a politically motivated \u2018Conspiracy Case&#8217;\u201d mass trial in April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour of those detained are on hunger strike, including one who, according to his lawyers, was subjected to physical violence in prison on November 11.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The defendants were charged with plotting to destabilise the country under various articles of Tunisia\u2019s Penal Code and the 2015 Counterterrorism Law. Human Rights Watch, which reviewed the judicial documents, said the charges are unfounded and lack credible evidence. The NGO has called on the court to immediately overturn the convictions and ensure the release of all those detained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis entire case has been a masquerade, from the baseless accusations to a judicial process devoid of fair trial guarantees,\u201d said Bassam Khawaja, deputy Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch. \u201cThe authorities should end this judicial farce, which is part of a wider crackdown on any form of criticism or dissent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 37 people detained include opponents of Saied, lawyers, activists and researchers.
