{"id":2163,"date":"2025-11-14T17:23:43","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T17:23:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=2163"},"modified":"2025-11-14T17:23:43","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T17:23:43","slug":"ukraine-faces-exhausting-battles-against-russia-in-zaporizhia-donetsk-russia-ukraine-war-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=2163","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine faces \u2018exhausting battles\u2019 against Russia in Zaporizhia, Donetsk | Russia-Ukraine war News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>Russian forces pressed into Ukraine\u2019s eastern towns of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad during the past week as Kyiv\u2019s military mounted a stout defence.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Ukraine\u2019s commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskii said almost half of the battles on a 1,200km (745-mile) front were happening in the two towns, claiming Russia has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/ukraine-russia-give-conflicting-accounts-situation-embattled-eastern-town-2025-11-10\/\">committed<\/a> 150,000 troops \u2013 almost a quarter of its strength in Ukraine \u2013 to capturing them.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 4 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>Russia sees Pokrovsk as a gateway to the remaining unoccupied parts of Donetsk, the region it has already claimed as its own in September 2022.<\/p>\n<p>As Ukrainians were gripped by a corruption scandal involving President Volodymyr Zelenskyy\u2019s allies, the battlefront was in a fluid state in which no side seemed to gain a decisive advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Both Russia and Ukraine often captured and recaptured neighbourhoods and individual buildings from each other.<\/p>\n<p>Hus, a drone squad commander from the 68th Jaeger brigade on the outskirts of Pokrovsk, told the Reuters news agency, \u201cHere, one building is held by our side, the next occupied by the enemy, and in a few hours it swaps.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4101840\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4101840\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4101840\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/INTERACTIVE-WHO-CONTROLS-WHAT-IN-UKRAINE-1762957289.png?quality=80\" alt=\"INTERACTIVE-WHO CONTROLS WHAT IN UKRAINE-1762957289\" data-interactive=\"true\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4101840\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Al Jazeera)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It did appear, however, that the Russians were slowly gaining ground.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian troops told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/pokrovsk-defenders-drones-alone-cant-hold-embattled-ukrainian-city-2025-11-05\/\">Reuters<\/a> the defence of Pokrovsk was \u201csteadily deteriorating\u201d, despite the army\u2019s efforts to reinforce it.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s Ministry of Defence said its troops were advancing through Pokrovsk in house-to-house battles.<\/p>\n<p>A Ukrainian unit commander said Russia was leading its assault with Spetsnaz special forces who were looking for Ukrainian mortar firing crews and drone units, aiming to neutralise them and ease the passage of reinforcements.<\/p>\n<p>These tactics had enabled the Russians to capture the centre of Pokrovsk by early November, and in the past week, they were attempting to work their way east and west. Ukrainian defenders appeared to be maintaining a stronghold in the north of Pokrovsk.<\/p>\n<p>In Myrnohrad, to the east of Pokrovsk, Russian troops were infiltrating the eastern reaches of the town, and this week made a marginal advance into its northern edge, while Ukrainian defenders firmly held the bulk of it.<\/p>\n<p>Both towns are precariously situated in a Russian encirclement from the north, south and east, in which supply and escape routes are only available towards the west.<\/p>\n<p>The operational significance of the towns\u2019 seizure by Russia depended on \u201cwhether Ukrainian forces conduct an orderly withdrawal or disorderly retreat\u201d and on \u201cRussian forces\u2019 ability to exploit the collapse of the pocket and conduct a successful pursuit\u201d, wrote the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4101835\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4101835\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4101835\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/INTERACTIVE-WHO-CONTROLS-WHAT-IN-EASTERN-UKRAINE-copy-1762957279.png?quality=80\" alt=\"INTERACTIVE-WHO CONTROLS WHAT IN EASTERN UKRAINE copy-1762957279\" data-interactive=\"true\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4101835\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Al Jazeera)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Russia\u2019s Defence Ministry has repeatedly claimed that the towns\u2019 complete envelopment and surrender with forces still inside was imminent.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Ukraine has defied Russian expectations and fought on, engaging in what Syrskii called an \u201cactive defence\u201d, using drones for \u201csearch and strike operations\u201d that took a toll.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery metre of our land costs Russia hundreds of military lives,\u201d Syrskii wrote on the Telegram messaging platform.<\/p>\n<p>In October alone, Syrskii said, short-range drones had struck 77,000 targets, a 16 percent increase on the 66,500 targets he said had been struck in September, which in turn represented an 11 percent increase on August.<\/p>\n<p>These figures suggested that Russian infiltrators\u2019 efforts in smoking out drone units and cutting off Ukrainian resupply were meeting with less success than the Russian command might have hoped.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the week, Russia also stiffened its offensive near Huliaipole, about 60km (37 miles) southwest of Pokrovsk, on the border of the Donetsk and Zaporizhia regions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4105279\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4105279\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4105279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2025-11-12T083544Z_1803021062_RC27UHAMT5IT_RTRMADP_3_UKRAINE-CRISIS-EVACUATION-ZAPORIZHZHA-REGION-1763067956.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C556&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Police officers assist a resident during an evacuation from the frontline town of Huliaipole, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Zaporizhzhia region, Ukraine November 11, 2025. Geolocated footage showed Ukraine was forced to abandon Rivnopillia on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Axios reported that the United States government shutdown may have delayed delivery of $5bn of weapons systems to NATO allies and Ukraine, though it did not draw a direct connection between this and the defence of Pokrovsk.<\/p>\n<p>Russia kept up pressure on other parts of the front.<\/p>\n<p>Its Defence Ministry claimed to have seized Uspenovka, Novoye and Sladkoye in Zaporizhia, Volchye in Dnipropetrovsk, and Gnatovke in Donetsk.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ukraine-s-deep-strikes\">Ukraine\u2019s deep strikes<\/h2>\n<p>Far from the ground war, Ukraine continued to pummel Russian refineries in a bid to cut off its fuel supply to the front.<\/p>\n<p>Lukoil\u2019s Volgograd refinery stopped operations on November 6 after being hit by Ukrainian drones, according to unnamed sources who spoke to Reuters. They said that the primary processing unit, representing a fifth of the plant\u2019s total capability and other equipment was damaged.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Ukraine struck substations near Belgorod, causing a blackout in the city.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Ukraine caused a fire at the port and oil terminal of Tuapse, on the Black Sea. Explosions were also heard coming from the nearby refinery in Orsk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia has an air defence deficit, with losses including S-300, S-400, and many Pantsir [air defence] systems that protected facilities,\u201d wrote the head of Ukraine\u2019s Center for Countering Disinformation, Andriy Kovalenko.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the enemy\u2019s air defence is near the front and Moscow, creating significant gaps in Russia\u2019s airspace.
