The Pentagon said on Monday the company was given a firm fixed-price contract for the procurement of NASAMS units, with work estimated to be completed by February 2031.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>\u201cFiscal 2026 foreign military sales [Taiwan] funds in the amount of $698,948,760 were obligated,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>In the Asia Pacific region, only Australia and Indonesia currently operate the NASAMS defence, three of which the US said last year Taiwan would receive as part of a $2bn weapons sale.<\/p>\n<p>Used in Ukraine to defend against the Russian invasion, the system offers a sharp boost in air defence capabilities that the US is exporting to Taiwan as demand for it surges.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"rock-solid-us-support\">\u2018Rock-solid\u2019 US support<\/h2>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s US approval of the sale of warplanes and other aircraft parts to Taiwan for $330m was its first such deal since President Donald Trump took office in January, prompting thanks from Taipei and anger in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should be clear today and will remain clear into the future that America\u2019s commitments to Taiwan are rock-solid,\u201d Raymond Greene, the de facto US ambassador in Taipei, told an event of the American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are backing these words with actions, with a focus on supporting Taiwan\u2019s efforts to achieve peace through strength. Nowhere is this more apparent than in our growing defence industrial cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The arms sales announcement comes amid a worsening diplomatic crisis between Beijing and Tokyo over Taiwan, after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested on November 7 that her country could intervene militarily in any attack on the self-ruled island.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Chinese coastguard ships sailed through waters around a group of East China Sea islands controlled by Japan but claimed by China.<\/p>\n<p>Japan said it also scrambled jets on Saturday after China flew a drone between Taiwan and Japan\u2019s westernmost island of Yonaguni.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the tension on Wednesday, Taiwanese Defence Minister Wellington Koo said China should not resort to force to resolve disputes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina should abandon its thinking of using force to resolve things,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan\u2019s military is beefing up its armaments to better tackle any attack from China, through efforts such as building its own submarines to defend vital maritime supply lines.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s military operates around Taiwan on an almost daily basis in what Taipei views as a \u201cgrey zone\u201d strategy to test and exhaust Taiwan\u2019s forces.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a lack of formal diplomatic ties, the US is bound by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself, to the constant anger of Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has pledged to \u201creunify\u201d the island with the Chinese mainland, by force if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Most countries follow China\u2019s demand, but many maintain economic and semiofficial diplomatic ties with Taipei.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Pentagon approves NASAMS deal as the US reiterates its \u2018rock-solid\u2019 commitment to Taipei\u2019s security.
