We will fight by all means for this to happen as soon as possible!\u201d his July 4 message on X read.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"travesty-of-justice\">\u2018Travesty of justice\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>After Monday\u2019s verdict, Mara\u2019s legal team said it had filed an appeal against what they called a \u201cparticularly harsh decision\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe judicial battle does not end today: it continues, with the same determination, on the grounds of law and truth,\u201d the lawyers said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the AFP news agency on the condition of anonymity, a close friend of Mara said the court\u2019s decision was not a surprise but said he had not committed a crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expected it,\u201d he said. \u201cTell me what his crime is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mali is ruled by a military government led by General Assimi Goita, which came to power in back-to-back coups in 2020 and 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Despite promises of a return to civilian rule by 2024, elections have been postponed indefinitely, political parties have been dissolved and Goita was granted an additional five years in power this year.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International called Mara\u2019s sentencing a \u201ctravesty of justice\u201d and called on Mali\u2019s military government to stop \u201cescalating repression of peaceful dissent and authoritarian practices, and immediately release those currently being detained solely for voicing their opinion\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Prime Minister Moussa Mara found guilty of \u2018undermining\u2019 the state by Bamako court in military-ruled Mali.
