At least 28 Palestinians have been killed in a wave of Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, medical sources tell Al Jazeera, in one of the largest breaches of the United States-brokered ceasefire that came into effect last month.<\/p>\n
The Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza said on Wednesday at least 77 Palestinians were also wounded in Israeli bombardment, according to a preliminary toll.<\/p>\n list of 4 items<\/span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n Reporting from Gaza City, Al Jazeera\u2019s Hani Mahmoud said the Israeli attacks targeted three specific sites including southern Gaza\u2019s al-Mawasi area, near Khan Younis.<\/p>\n Israel also struck a junction in the eastern Gaza City area of Shujayea filled with displaced Palestinian families, and a building in the Zeitoun neighbourhood where at least 10 people \u2013 including an entire family \u2013 were killed.<\/p>\n \u201cA father, a mother, and their three children were killed inside this building,\u201d said Mahmoud, adding that the intensified attacks are fuelling panic throughout the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n \u201cAlready, Palestinians across Gaza are dealing with daily horrors,\u201d he said, noting Israeli bombings have not stopped\u00a0since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into force on October 10.<\/p>\n \u201cThe war is still taking place, and Palestinians are still dying due to the ongoing violence.\u201d<\/p>\n The Israeli military said it launched Wednesday\u2019s strikes on \u201cHamas targets\u201d across Gaza in response to an incident in which its troops came under fire in Khan Younis in the south of the territory.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe [army] will continue to act forcefully to eliminate any threat to the State of Israel,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n But Hamas rejected the claim that Israel\u2019s forces were fired on, calling it \u201ca flimsy and transparent attempt to justify its crimes and violations\u201d in Gaza.<\/p>\n \u201cWe consider this a dangerous escalation through which the war criminal [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu seeks to resume the genocide against our people,\u201d the Palestinian group said in a statement, referring to the latest Israeli attacks.<\/p>\n Al Jazeera\u2019s Nour Odeh also noted that Israel has given itself \u201cthe right to be judge, jury and executioner\u201d in the implementation of the truce.<\/p>\n \u201cIt judges for itself whether there is compliance by Hamas of this ceasefire [in Gaza] \u2026 and if it decides that there is no compliance, Israel wages a series of air strikes against specific targets,\u201d Odeh reported from Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.<\/p>\n Wednesday\u2019s assault on Gaza coincided with a series of Israeli attacks on Lebanon, where tensions are rapidly escalating after an Israeli bombing of a Palestinian refugee camp in the south of the country killed more than a dozen people on Tuesday.<\/p>\n It also came just days after the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) passed a resolution backing US President Donald Trump\u2019s peace plan for Gaza, including the deployment of a so-called \u201cinternational stabilisation force\u201d.<\/p>\n The resolution also greenlit the establishment of a \u201cboard of peace\u201d to oversee governance in the coastal territory, as the US and Israel demand that Hamas relinquish control of Gaza.<\/p>\n Hamas and other Palestinian factions in Gaza have rejected the plan, saying it lays down a framework that goes against \u201cthe national will\u201d.<\/p>\n Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq called on UNSC members to vote against the resolution, warning it could lead to the \u201cundermining and rejection of Palestinian self-determination\u201d.<\/p>\n Khaled Elgindy, a senior fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, a US-based think tank, said Israel\u2019s attacks on Gaza challenge \u201cboth the international community and the limits\u201d of the UNSC resolution.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a real test for the [UN] Security Council, for the United States, and for the international community,\u201d Elgindy told Al Jazeera. \u201cAre they going to uphold this ceasefire that they\u2019ve been celebrating now for many weeks?\u201d<\/p>\n Supporters of the US-backed UN resolution argued it would help bring a lasting halt to Israel\u2019s war on Gaza, which has killed nearly 70,000 Palestinians since October 2023.<\/p>\n \u201cBut we don\u2019t even have that.
