Maybe we are next,\u201d said Shahnaj Parvin, who lives near the epicentre of Friday\u2019s earthquake and had never experienced anything like that before.<\/p>\n<p>Cracks have developed in dozens of houses in her area, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was hanging my children\u2019s clothes on the washing line when the tremor struck,\u201d added Parvin.<\/p>\n<p>The government has activated Bangladesh\u2019s emergency operation centre to assess the scale of the damage and to coordinate relief and rescue operations.<\/p>\n<p>Rubayet Kabir of the Meteorological Department\u2019s Earthquake Observation and Research Centre said Bangladesh\u2019s geography makes the country of 170 million people prone to earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome small tremors are expected after any major earthquake,\u201d Kabir said. \u201cThere has been no massive earthquake in the last 100 years or more, but Bangladesh has been vulnerable for quite some time,\u201d he told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, after the earthquake struck, Shadman Sakif Islam, a Dhaka resident, told Al Jazeera that \u201csmall ripples\u201d he noticed in his coffee were followed by a \u201cmassive shake that started occurring without any warning\u201d as the earth shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy chair and the table started shaking wildly, and I was stuck there for 10-15 seconds without processing what was going on,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never felt anything like this in my whole life \u2026 I felt like riding on a boat, riding massive waves one after another,\u201d the resident added.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera\u2019s Tanvir Chowdhury, reporting from Dhaka, said on Friday, \u201cIt was one of the biggest earthquakes in recent history and was very close to the capital city.
