It feels like truth is finally finding its voice,\u201d he continues.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4004712\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4004712\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4004712\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/AP25275618244434-1759474442.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Global protests erupt over Israeli interception of Gaza aid flotilla\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4004712\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pro-Palestinian demonstrators gather in front of the Colosseum in Rome on October 2, 2025, to protest after a Gaza-bound aid flotilla was illegally boarded by Israel in the Mediterranean [Gregorio Borgia\/AP Photo]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"nearly-50-000-pro-palestine-protests-in-two-years\">Nearly 50,000 pro-Palestine protests in two years<\/h2>\n<p>In recent months, pro-Palestine protests have seen a noticeable uptick \u2013 between May and September 2025, they increased by 43 percent compared with the five months prior.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past two years, there have been at least 49,000 pro-Palestinian protests across 133 countries and territories, according to the Armed Conflict Location &amp; Event Data Project (ACLED).<\/p>\n<p>The highest number of pro-Palestine demonstrations was recorded in Yemen (15,266), followed by Morocco (5,482), the US (5,346), Turkiye (2,349), Iran (1,919), Pakistan (1,539), France (1,397), Italy (1,390), Spain (1,102) and Australia (967).<\/p>\n<p>The map below shows the locations of the 49,000 pro-Palestinian protests held between October 7, 2023, and October 3, 2025.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Pro-Palestinian protests around the world since October 7, 2023\" aria-label=\"Symbol map\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-QUAXv\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/QUAXv\/5\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width:0;min-width:100% !important;border:none\" height=\"679\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-growth-of-a-boycott\">The growth of a boycott<\/h2>\n<p>Israel has grown increasingly isolated, the founder of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, Omar Barghouti, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>BDS launched in 2005 to advocate for Palestinian rights and end Israel\u2019s occupation and apartheid through targeting complicity, not individuals, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Barghouti is from a Palestinian family that is deeply involved in politics and culture. Among the famous Barghoutis is Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, who is serving out several life sentences in an Israeli prison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe BDS movement has played the most important role in exacerbating the isolation of Israel\u2019s regime of settler-colonialism, apartheid and now genocide,\u201d Barghouti said.<\/p>\n<p>Barghouti noted that even the chairman of the Israel Export Institute, Avi Balashnikov, had admitted to challenges in global trade.<\/p>\n<p>Balashnikov, at the Mind the Tech Conference 2024, said: \u201cEconomic boycotts and BDS organisations present major challenges, and in some countries, we are forced to operate under the radar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBDS has achieved this impact by channelling the immense grief, rage and solidarity expressed by tens of millions worldwide into strategic, nonviolent, and very effective boycott and divestment campaigns,\u201d Barghouti adds.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4064128\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4064128\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4064128\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-27-at-8.09.23-PM-1761577778.png?quality=80\" alt=\"Omar Barghouti\" data-interactive=\"true\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4064128\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Omar Barghouti is cofounder of the BDS campaign [Screengrab from Al Jazeera\u2019s Reframe]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The BDS movement has identified numerous companies that are considered complicit in Israel\u2019s occupation, human rights violations, or apartheid policies.<\/p>\n<p>Their campaigns are divided into three main groups:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Priority boycott targets:<\/strong> Companies and institutions with a proven record of complicity in Israeli apartheid and occupation. The BDS movement calls for a complete boycott of these brands.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pressure targets<\/strong>: Companies that BDS actively pressures through boycotts (when alternatives exist), lobbying, peaceful protests, social media campaigns, and strategic legal actions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organic boycotts:<\/strong> Grassroots campaigns started by local communities, which BDS supports because of the boycotted brands\u2019 complicity in Israel\u2019s actions against Palestinians.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4064099\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4064099\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4064099\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Interactive_TwoYear_Boycott_Oct7_2025_2-1761576552.png?quality=80\" alt=\"Interactive_TwoYear_Boycott_Oct7_2025_2-1761576552\" data-interactive=\"true\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4064099\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Al Jazeera)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"how-are-people-boycotting\">How are people boycotting?<\/h2>\n<p>Sumayya Rashid*, a 45-year-old expat mother living in the United Arab Emirates, has been teaching her 11-year-old daughter about what Palestinian children are experiencing and explaining to her how buying certain brands indirectly supports the genocide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe no longer buy anything from McDonald\u2019s, KFC, Pizza Hut or Carrefour. These were brands that we would consume before the boycott,\u201d says Rashid, adding that they have found local replacements where possible.<\/p>\n<p>Rashid says her daughter is immersed in Palestinian culture because of school and the community around it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe may not understand the extent of the genocide, but she does know we can\u2019t be supporting Israel as they are the instigators of the violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rashid has found that it is easy to find alternatives in the UAE, but she relies on the Boycat app to double-check any items she is not sure about.<\/p>\n<p>Boycat is one of several mobile apps launched over the past years to help consumers identify products targeted for boycott \u2013 it has partnered with the BDS movement, which helps keep its list up to date and ensure it follows BDS goals.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DBJzkoDvPXH\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\"background:#FFF;border:0;border-radius:3px;box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15);margin:1px;max-width:658px;min-width:326px;padding:0;width:calc(100% - 2px)\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Across the Atlantic, in Toronto, Canada, is 26-year-old Jaspreet Kaur*, who feels there are some restrictions on speaking openly in support of Palestine in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPalestine brought a lot of things into perspective for a lot of us. It\u2019s just even looking down at your cup of morning coffee, and seeing this is such a core need, a necessity, which is a sheer luxury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKids can\u2019t play in the street without the fear of being bombed \u2013 that\u2019s something I never have to think about,\u201d says Kaur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember the last time I had Starbucks or McDonald\u2019s, or used Airbnb or booking.com,\u201d she says adamantly.<\/p>\n<p>Kaur says she has boycotted as much as possible, using apps to guide her, but that some consumer items from multinationals have crept back into her life due to budget constraints.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond her personal shopping choices, Kaur has found it difficult to be vocal about supporting Palestine while working in corporate finance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t go to as many protests as I would like to, I\u2019ve taken off my Palestinian phone case and removed the Palestinian flag from my Instagram bio, I can\u2019t be as loud as I need, as I want to personally,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>As an immigrant waiting for her citizenship, Kaur says she feels her actions and thoughts on Palestine are not so accepted publicly and at work.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-has-the-boycott-s-effect-been\">What has the boycott\u2019s effect been?<\/h2>\n<p>Boycotts have not only affected the bottom lines of several companies complicit in Israel\u2019s occupation but have also led to investments being pulled out of Israel and international embargoes on it, increasing economic and political pressure.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2024, French retailer Carrefour closed all its stores in Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>BDS has long highlighted Carrefour\u2019s business ties with Israeli firms in illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The company also exited Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain, its locations being reopened as HyperMax, a local grocery chain launched by regional franchisee, Majid Al Futtaim.<\/p>\n<p>The closures are seen as a major win for the movement, demonstrating the power of consumer-led campaigns on multinational corporations.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the largest US food and beverage chains, McDonald\u2019s and Starbucks, have felt the effect of boycotts, facing declining sales and reputational backlash, particularly across the Middle East and other Muslim countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>During an earnings call in January 2024, McDonald\u2019s Chief Executive Officer Chris Kempczinski said the fast food giant had seen a \u201cmeaningful impact\u201d in several markets.<\/p>\n<p>Starbucks reported three consecutive quarters of global sales declines, with revenue down 2 percent for the year 2024.<\/p>\n<p>In September, the giant announced plans to close dozens of US outlets and lay off some 900 employees as part of a $1bn restructuring initiative to reverse declining performance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4026041\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4026041\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4026041\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2025-10-11T112616Z_1152776232_RC2N9HAPJKH4_RTRMADP_3_ISRAEL-PALESTINIANS-BRITAIN-PROTEST-1760184530.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Pro-Palestinian supporters hold placards\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4026041\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Demonstrators from the \u201cPalestine Coalition\u201d gather in support of Palestinians, after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza went into effect, in London, UK, October 11, 2025 [Jaimi Joy\/Reuters]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"divestments-sanctions-and-diplomatic-measures\">Divestments, sanctions, and diplomatic measures<\/h2>\n<p>In September, the Spanish government cancelled a weapons deal with Israel worth nearly 700 million euros ($815m). Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had previously announced an upcoming law banning military trade with Israel, which came into effect on October 9.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, Norway\u2019s pension fund and France\u2019s AXA divested from Israeli assets linked to settlements.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland, Denmark, and the Netherlands\u2019 pension funds also withdrew investments in Israeli-linked companies, including Caterpillar, Expedia, and TripAdvisor, due to concerns over human rights violations and involvement in illegal Israeli settlements.<\/p>\n<p>In June, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom formally sanctioned far-right Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich for \u201cincitement of violence\u201d against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>In the same month, Ireland, Slovenia and Spain called for the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Sweden has also asked the European Council to adopt sanctions \u201cagainst Israeli ministers who promote illegal settlement activities and actively work against a negotiated two-state solution\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>For a Palestinian witnessing the turning of the global tide, Mustafa says he feels the movement for Palestine has become \u201cone of the most dynamic social justice movements of our time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has brought together people from every background \u2013 faith-based, secular, Indigenous, and global \u2013 uniting them under a shared demand for human dignity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of that, I believe the Palestinian movement will shape how future struggles for justice are fought and understood,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"un-monitoring\">UN monitoring<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"UN lists 158 firms tied to illegal Israeli settlements\" aria-label=\"Table\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-oQ6Zx\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/oQ6Zx\/3\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width:0;min-width:100% !important;border:none\" height=\"633\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The UN Office of Human Rights, since 2020, has maintained a database of companies that are profiting from Israel\u2019s illegal settlement enterprise in the occupied West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>In its September 2025 update, it listed 158 firms operating inside settlements deemed unlawful by the International Court of Justice.<\/p>\n<p>While nearly 90 percent of the companies are Israeli, the list also includes multinationals registered in Canada, China, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, the UK and the US.<\/p>\n<p>These include well-known companies like Airbnb, Booking.com, Expedia, Motorola, Re\/Max and TripAdvisor.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Do boycotts against Israel work?
