(Photo by Fethi Belaid \/ AFP)\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3593998\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tunisian President Kais Saied has been criticised for cracking down on his critics [Fethi Belaid\/AFP]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thousands of protesters took to the streets of the Tunisian capital on Saturday to protest against what they call Saied\u2019s escalating authoritarianism\u00a0and the jailing of government critics.<\/p>\n<p>At least 2,000 people, wearing black and carrying whistles and red ribbons, marched through Tunis, chanting slogans, including \u201cthe people want the fall of the regime\u201d and \u201cno fear no terror, the street belongs to the people\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-dahmani-case\">The Dahmani case<\/h2>\n<p>Dahmani, 60, was arrested by masked men in May 2024 and faced charges in several cases over her comments on radio and television denouncing racism in Tunisia.<\/p>\n<p>She was convicted in at least three cases in recent months, including under a law Saied enacted in 2022 to ban \u201cspreading false news\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The EU Parliament\u2019s resolution also called for the repeal of the law, \u201cwhich has led to prosecutions for expressions of opinion, and of all abusive legislation used to limit freedoms\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It also demanded the release of \u201call those detained for exercising their right to freedom of expression, including political prisoners and human rights defenders\u201d in Tunisia.<\/p>\n<p>Saied was elected in 2019 after Tunisia emerged as the only fledgling democracy to emerge in the years that followed the Arab Spring in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, he staged a sweeping power grab, and human rights groups have since warned of a rollback on freedoms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A court sentences suspects over charges on \u2018conspiracy against state security\u2019 and \u2018belonging to a terrorist group\u2019.
