{"id":3899,"date":"2025-12-01T06:00:02","date_gmt":"2025-12-01T06:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=3899"},"modified":"2025-12-01T06:00:02","modified_gmt":"2025-12-01T06:00:02","slug":"venezuela-calls-on-opec-to-counter-us-threats-oil-and-gas-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=3899","title":{"rendered":"Venezuela calls on OPEC to counter US threats | Oil and Gas News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead\"><em>Maduro asks oil-producing bloc to help protect Venezuela\u2019s oil reserves from US \u2018aggression\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has called on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to help his country counter \u201cgrowing and illegal threats\u201d from the United States and its president, Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to fellow members of the bloc of major oil-producing countries on Sunday, Maduro accused the US of trying to \u201cseize\u201d Venezuela\u2019s oil reserves, the world\u2019s largest.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 4 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>\u201cI hope to count on your best efforts to help stop this aggression, which is growing stronger and seriously threatens the balance of the international energy market, both for producing and consuming countries,\u201d Maduro said, according to a copy of the letter published by state broadcaster TeleSUR.<\/p>\n<p>Maduro also \u201cformally denounced\u201d the \u201cuse of lethal military force against the country\u2019s territory, people and institutions\u201d, both to OPEC\u00a0and the larger group of OPEC+ countries.<\/p>\n<p>While Venezuela holds the world\u2019s largest proven oil reserves, estimated at 303 billion barrels as of 2023, it exported just $4.05bn worth of crude oil in 2023, far below other major-oil producing countries, in part due to US sanctions imposed during the first Trump presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Along with Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, the Latin American country was a founding member of OPEC in 1960, with its members cooperating to control oil supply and influence the price of oil in the decades that followed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3925528\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/INTERACTIVE-Crude-oil-reserves-vs-exports-1756989578.png?quality=80\" alt=\"INTERACTIVE - Crude oil reserves vs exports-1756989578\" data-interactive=\"true\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"military-buildup\">Military buildup<\/h2>\n<p>Maduro\u2019s letter comes a day after Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that Venezuela\u2019s airspace was closed, without explaining further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY,\u201d Trump wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Caracas called Trump\u2019s statement a \u201ccolonialist threat\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Maduro\u2019s government has maintained for months that the Trump administration\u2019s significantly escalating military presence in the Caribbean is directed at gaining access to the country\u2019s oil and gas reserves.<\/p>\n<p>The White House has claimed that it is focused on combating drug trafficking, though critics have pointed out that Washington\u2019s own data shows that Venezuela is not a significant source of drugs arriving in the US.<\/p>\n<p>At least 83 people have been killed in US strikes on vessels that Trump claims were carrying drugs. Human rights advocates have decried the attacks as extrajudicial killings that violate international law.<\/p>\n<p>The US has also deployed a considerable military presence to the Caribbean region, including the world\u2019s largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R Ford, other warships, thousands of troops and F-35 fighter jets.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"drill-baby-drill\">\u2018Drill, baby drill\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>As president, Trump has promised to significantly ramp up oil production, fulfilling a promise from his 2023 re-election campaign to \u201cdrill, baby drill\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In late November, the Trump administration announced new plans to drill for oil off the\u00a0California and Florida coasts for the first time in decades.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, many of the island countries in the Caribbean region are calling on fossil-fuel dependent countries to transition to other sources of energy, as they struggle to respond to tropical storms and other disasters, which are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maduro asks oil-producing bloc to help protect Venezuela\u2019s oil reserves from US \u2018aggression\u2019.
