A United Nations Security Council (UNSC) delegation has arrived in Syria for its first-ever trip to the country, reported state media, just days before the war-ravaged nation marks the first anniversary of the ousting of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad.<\/p>\n
The UNSC delegation arrived via the Jdeidet Yabous border crossing between Lebanon and Syria and \u201cis scheduled to meet a number of Syrian officials\u201d and members of civil society, state news agency SANA reported on Thursday.<\/p>\n list of 3 items<\/span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n Shortly afterwards, the agency said the delegation was visiting the capital Damascus\u2019s heavily damaged suburb of Jobar.<\/p>\n The diplomats will meet Syria\u2019s new authorities, including President Ahmed al-Sharaa, before visiting neighbouring Lebanon on Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n Al Jazeera\u2019s Assed Baig, reporting from Damascus, said the UNSC delegation will also visit some of Damascus\u2019s historical sites.<\/p>\n \u201cThis gives them [the UNSC delegation] the opportunity to look at Syria away from the political and military dynamics, it shows them the cultural heritage of Syria but also the history that has been damaged during the civil war,\u201d as the country embarks on the initial phases of post-civil war reconstruction.<\/p>\n The UNSC visit has been \u201cvery well\u201d received in Syria, said Baig.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat it does is tell everybody that Syria is trying to reestablish itself on the international stage, it is trying to build relations with the United Nations. It has the support of neighbouring countries as well as Arab regional countries. It has the support of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n The country\u2019s humanitarian situation will also be discussed during the visit, said Baig, as \u201cmany people are still displaced within the country\u201d and many parts of the country continue to be affected by the destruction caused by the civil war.<\/p>\n While the UN works to re-establish itself in Syria, the council recently lifted sanctions against al-Sharaa, a former rebel fighter whose forces led the lightning offensive that ousted Bashar al-Assad last December.<\/p>\n The UN has urged an inclusive transition in the multiethnic country. With international legitimacy one of al-Sharaa\u2019s main priorities, the government has been seeking to keep a lid on eruptions of sectarian violence.<\/p>\n Last month, the killing of a Bedouin couple just south of the country\u2019s third largest city, Homs, threatened to spark sectarian clashes like the ones reported in coastal areas in March and again in Suwayda in July. However, security forces from the ministries of interior and defence deployed to the area and, in tandem with some tribal leaders, calmed the situation.<\/p>\n The nation ravaged by 14 years of ruinous civil war has also had to contend with more brazen, frequent and violent Israeli military incursions since it expanded its occupation of southern Syria over the past year, despite assertions by al-Sharaa\u2019s government that it is not looking to engage in hostilities with Israel.<\/p>\n Most recently, an Israeli raid last week killed 13 people in the town of Beit Jinn, southwest of Damascus.<\/p>\n Israel seized territory in the Syrian Golan Heights following the 1967 war and has held it ever since. However, following the fall of al-Assad, Israel violated a 1974 agreement and again invaded its neighbour\u2019s territory, occupying more land along the border as part of a \u201cbuffer zone\u201d, including the strategically located Jabal al-Sheikh, a mountain that commands views over northern Israel and southern Syria.<\/p>\n Talks have been ongoing over a security agreement between Israel and Syria for months, but appear to have made little progress in recent weeks.<\/p>\n Slovenian UN ambassador Samuel Zbogar told a news conference on Monday, \u201cThe visit to Syria and Lebanon is the first official visit of the Security Council to the Middle East in six years, the first visit to Syria ever.\u201d<\/p>\n Slovenia currently holds the UNSC\u2019s rotating presidency.<\/p>\n The trip comes \u201cat a crucial time for the region\u201d and for both countries, Zbogar said, noting the new authorities\u2019 efforts towards Syria\u2019s transition as well as a year-old ceasefire in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah, \u201cwhich we see daily that is being challenged\u201d.<\/p>\n The visit is important in \u201cexpressing support and solidarity with both countries, and learning about the challenges, conveying the messages, also, on the path forward that the council would like to see in both countries\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n He noted that \u201cthere\u2019s still a bit of lack of trust in the UN-Syria relationship, which we try to breach with this visit\u201d.<\/p>\n Both sides are looking to benefit from this visit, added Baig.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat the [Syrian] government wants from the United Nations is support and solidarity, but also they want to talk about the humanitarian aid coming here [to the country] and also reconstruction.\u201d<\/p>\n The UN, on the other hand, \u201cwants to talk about the [country\u2019s] politics going forward, how this country is going to rebuild itself..and how Ahmed al-Sharaa\u2019s government going forward is going to have an inclusive government, representing all the different factions and ethnicities and different people within Syria.\u201d<\/p>\n UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres\u2019s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said on Tuesday, \u201cWe very much hope that the visit will increase the dialogue between the United Nations and Syria.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n A United Nations Security Council (UNSC) delegation has arrived in Syria for its first-ever trip to the country, reported state media, just days before the war-ravaged nation marks the first anniversary of the ousting of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad.
