{"id":4506,"date":"2025-12-06T04:48:57","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T04:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=4506"},"modified":"2025-12-06T04:48:57","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T04:48:57","slug":"australia-sanctions-afghan-taliban-officials-over-womens-rights-abuses-taliban-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=4506","title":{"rendered":"Australia sanctions Afghan Taliban officials over women\u2019s rights abuses | Taliban News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead\"><em>Canberra said the Taliban officials are guilty of oppressing women and girls, as well as \u2018undermining good governance\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>The Australian government has imposed financial sanctions and travel bans on four officials in Afghanistan\u2019s Taliban government, citing the deteriorating human rights situation in the country, particularly for women and girls.<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a statement on Saturday that Canberra had established a \u201cworld-first\u201d autonomous sanctions framework for Afghanistan, which would allow it to \u201cdirectly impose its own sanctions and travel bans to increase pressure on the Taliban\u201d.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>The new framework also introduces an arms embargo, Australia\u2019s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said, as well as prohibitions on \u201cproviding related services and activities to Afghanistan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The department named the sanctioned Taliban officials as Minister for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice Muhammad Khalid Hanafi; Minister of Higher Education Neda Mohammad Nadeem; Minister of Justice Abdul-Hakim Sharei; and Chief Justice Abdul Hakim Haqqani.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Australian Government has established a world-first autonomous sanctions framework for Afghanistan, as part of our ongoing efforts to hold the Taliban to account.<\/p>\n<p>In effect from today, we have also announced the first listings under the new framework.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Senator Penny Wong (@SenatorWong) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorWong\/status\/1997093001852805405?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 5, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Wong said the officials had been sanctioned due to their involvement \u201cin the oppression of women and girls and in undermining good governance or the rule of law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis includes restricting access to education, employment, freedom of movement and the ability to participate in public life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Canberra said its new framework \u201cbuilds on\u201d the 140 individuals and entities it already sanctions as part of the United Nations Security Council\u2019s Taliban framework.<\/p>\n<p>Afghanistan\u2019s Taliban government is yet to publicly respond to Canberra\u2019s latest measures.<\/p>\n<p>In July, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Chief Justice Haqqani, alongside the Taliban\u2019s supreme leader, Haibatullah Akhunzada, for alleged crimes against humanity for persecuting women and girls.<\/p>\n<p>Announcing the sanctions, the ICC said the Taliban has \u201cseverely deprived\u201d girls and women of the rights to education, privacy, family life and the freedoms of movement, expression, thought, conscience and religion.<\/p>\n<p>Since returning to power following the withdrawal of\u00a0United States and NATO troops \u2013 of which Australia was a part \u2013 from Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban has enacted severe restrictions on the rights and freedoms of women and girls, including the right to work and study.<\/p>\n<p>The Taliban has rejected accusations of violating women\u2019s rights, claiming they are respected \u201cwithin the framework of Islamic law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2022, Afghanistan\u2019s Ministry of Higher Education banned female students from the country\u2019s universities until further notice, in a move widely condemned by the international community.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the UN said the Taliban government had \u201cdeliberately deprived\u201d at least 1.4 million girls of their right to an education during its time in power, totally about 80 percent of school-age girls.<\/p>\n<p>Afghans have also been plunged further into poverty since the Taliban takeover, fuelled in part by the ban on female participation in the workplace, with vast swaths of the country\u2019s population now heavily reliant on humanitarian aid to survive.<\/p>\n<p>In her statement, Wong said the Australian government \u201cremains deeply concerned at the deteriorating situation\u201d in the country, continuing that a \u201chumanitarian permit\u201d had been carved out in the new sanctions framework, allowing the continued provision of aid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur thoughts are with those suffering under the Taliban\u2019s oppression, as well as the Afghan community in Australia,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canberra said the Taliban officials are guilty of oppressing women and girls, as well as \u2018undermining good governance\u2019.
