{"id":4636,"date":"2025-12-07T14:51:30","date_gmt":"2025-12-07T14:51:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=4636"},"modified":"2025-12-07T14:51:30","modified_gmt":"2025-12-07T14:51:30","slug":"bethlehems-christmas-tree-lights-up-after-two-years-of-darkness-occupied-west-bank-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=4636","title":{"rendered":"Bethlehem\u2019s Christmas tree lights up after two years of darkness | Occupied West Bank News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p><strong>Bethlehem, occupied West Bank \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0For the first time in two years, the Christmas tree in Bethlehem lit up the night sky, restoring a glimmer of joy to the birthplace of Jesus after seasons overshadowed by Israel\u2019s genocidal war on Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Palestinians watching the lighting said the celebration carried a dual meaning: Hope in the Nativity and a yearning for freedom from the Israeli siege gripping Bethlehem and cities across the occupied territory.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, residents say the celebrations remain dimmed by the grief over mass casualties and destruction in Gaza and Bethlehem\u2019s economic paralysis under tightening Israeli harassment.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s celebrations were limited to religious rituals, attended by church leaders and local officials who stood on a stage in Manger Square for a modest tree-lighting ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands gathered in the square, singing hymns and listening to choirs carolling \u2013 the only form of festivity permitted at a time many described as a mix of joy and mourning.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-mayor-also-shared-a-message-sent-to-bethlehem-by-pope-leo-xiv-saying-the-pontiff-assured-residents-he-carries-bethlehem-in-his-heart-and-prayers-and-is-working-for-an-end-to-palestinian-suffering-urging-people-in-gaza-not-to-give-in-to-despair\"><strong>\u2018A different Christmas\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe celebrations this year are unlike any before,\u201d Reverend Munther Isaac, pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBethlehem is beautifully decorated, and the tree is lit, but there is deep sorrow inside every Palestinian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough these celebrations, Palestinians send a message of resilience \u2013 to say we are still here, determined to live, to keep Bethlehem the capital of Christmas, and to continue telling its story. Palestinians love life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bethlehem\u2019s Mayor Maher N Canawati echoed the message, saying the municipality chose to restore the city\u2019s Christmas lights after \u201ca long period of darkness and silence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to revive hope for the people of Bethlehem and all Palestinians, and to send that hope to Gaza and to the world,\u201d he told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>Canawati stressed that Bethlehem \u201cis open and safe\u201d, saying it is time for the world to support Palestinians\u2019 steadfastness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Bethlehem lights its Christmas tree, it \u2026 tells us that hope is a strength. But, he added, \u201cThe suffering and destruction in Gaza remain in our hearts. Adrian Habibeh, a young artisan working in his family\u2019s olivewood shop where hand-carvings are sold to religious devotees and tourists, said tourism has been \u201cnearly frozen for more than two years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s Christmas celebrations are not like before,\u201d he said. \u201cBut we hope this will be a year of joy \u2013 and that tourism will return.
