Candidate Kat Abughazaleh decried the charges as \u2018political prosecution\u2019 amid a Trump standoff with Democratic cities.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n A Democratic candidate for the United States House of Representatives has been indicted by the Department of Justice in connection with a protest in front of a federal immigration facility in Illinois.<\/p>\n On Wednesday, in a post on social media, Kat Abughazaleh, 26, announced that she had been charged alongside five other protesters.<\/p>\n list of 3 items<\/span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n \u201cThis political prosecution is an attack on all of our First Amendment rights,\u201d Abughazaleh, a progressive influencer and journalist, said in the post. \u201cI\u2019m not backing down, and we\u2019re going to win.\u201d<\/p>\n Currently, Abughazelah is running for an open seat representing Illinois\u2019s ninth congressional district, to the north of Chicago. She is slated to appear on the Democratic primary ballot in March.<\/p>\n Federal prosecutors, however, have accused her and her co-defendants of having \u201cphysically hindered and impeded\u201d Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers at a detention facility in Broadview, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.<\/p>\n The indictment said they surrounded a government vehicle, \u201cbanged aggressively\u201d, stopped the agent from driving forward, and etched \u201cPIG\u201d on the body of the vehicle. It further alleged that the group broke the vehicle\u2019s side mirrors and a windshield wiper.<\/p>\n Abughazaleh was charged with \u201cconspiracy to impede or injure an officer\u201d and \u201cassaulting, resisting or impeding\u201d a federal agent for the September 23 incident.<\/p>\n I have been charged in a federal indictment sought by the Department of Justice.This political prosecution is an attack on all of our First Amendment rights. Baraka has since seen the charges against him dropped.<\/p>\n Trump has also sought to deploy the National Guard to several cities, including Chicago, but has been\u00a0repeatedly\u00a0blocked by the courts. The Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling in the Chicago case, which could have wide-ranging implications for the future of such deployments.<\/p>\n A federal appeals court was also set to hear a Trump administration challenge on Wednesday to a lower court\u2019s ruling barring the National Guard deployment to Portland, Oregon.<\/p>\n As part of those cases, the Trump administration has faced scrutiny over its treatment of immigrants and protesters alike.<\/p>\n The administration has also been criticised for comparing protesters to \u201cterrorists\u201d and pursuing disproportionate charges in court.<\/p>\n Even Abughazelah\u2019s opponent in the 2026 Democratic primary, Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, was among those condemning Wednesday\u2019s indictment.<\/p>\n \u201cThe only people engaged in violent and dangerous behavior at Broadview have been ICE,\u201d Biss said in a statement carried by the local news site Evanston Now.<\/p>\n Biss noted he had also protested the \u201ckidnapping of our neighbours\u201d at the facility multiple times.<\/p>\n \u201cNow, the Trump Administration is targeting protestors, including political candidates, in an effort to silence dissent and scare residents into submission,\u201d Biss said. \u201cIt won\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Candidate Kat Abughazaleh decried the charges as \u2018political prosecution\u2019 amid a Trump standoff with Democratic cities.
