Exiled punk band says its members are proud to be branded \u2018extremists\u2019 and hits back at Putin as an \u2018aging sociopath\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n A Moscow district court has designated Russian punk protest band Pussy Riot as an extremist organisation, according to the state TASS news agency.<\/p>\n The exiled group\u2019s lawyer, Leonid Solovyov, told TASS that Monday\u2019s court ruling was made in response to claims brought by the Russian Prosecutor General\u2019s Office and that the band plans to appeal. According to TASS, the case was heard in a closed session at the request of the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n list of 4 items<\/span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n The court said that it had upheld prosecution submissions \u201cto recognise the punk band Pussy Riot as an extremist organisation and ban its activities on the territory of the Russian Federation\u201d, the AFP news agency reports.<\/p>\n An official Pussy Riot social media account shared a statement, responding defiantly to the ruling, saying the band\u2019s members, who have lived in exile for years, were \u201cfreer than those who try to silence us\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cWe can say what I think about putin \u2014 that he is an aging sociopath spreading his venom around the world like cancer,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n \u201cIn today\u2019s Russia, telling the truth is extremism. So be it \u2013 we\u2019re proud extremists, then.\u201d<\/p>\n The group\u2019s designation will make it easier for the authorities to go after the band\u2019s supporters in Russia or people who have worked with them in the past.<\/p>\n \u201cThis court order is designed to erase the very existence of Pussy Riot from the minds of Russians,\u201d the band said. \u201cOwning a balaclava, having our song on your computer, or liking one of our posts could lead to prison time.\u201d<\/p>\n According to TASS, earlier reports said that the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office had brought the case over Pussy Riot\u2019s previous actions, including at Christ the Saviour Cathedral in February 2012, and the World Cup Final in Moscow in 2018.<\/p>\n Today Russian court designated Pussy Riot as an extremist organization. <\/p>\n And yet, we’re freer than those who try to silence us.
