{"id":6058,"date":"2025-12-20T07:21:47","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T07:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=6058"},"modified":"2025-12-20T07:21:47","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T07:21:47","slug":"uns-top-court-to-hold-myanmar-genocide-hearings-in-january-rohingya-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=6058","title":{"rendered":"UN\u2019s top court to hold Myanmar genocide hearings in January | Rohingya News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead\"><em>Witnesses from Myanmar\u2019s Rohingya community will also address closed-door ICJ hearing.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will hold public hearings in a landmark case next month accusing Myanmar of committing genocide against its Rohingya community, the top United Nations court said.<\/p>\n<p>The proceedings are expected to set precedents that could affect South Africa\u2019s case against Israel over the war in Gaza, as this will be the first genocide case the ICJ has heard on its merits in more than a decade.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 4 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>In the first week of hearings, The Gambia, a predominantly Muslim West African country which brought the case to the ICJ, will outline its arguments from January 12 to 15.<\/p>\n<p>Backed by the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation, The Gambia filed the case at the ICJ in 2019, accusing Myanmar of committing genocide against the mostly Muslim Rohingya ethnic group.<\/p>\n<p>Myanmar, which has denied carrying out genocide, can then present its case before the court from January 16 to January 20.<\/p>\n<p>In an unusual move, the ICJ has also allocated three days for hearing witnesses. These hearings will be closed to the public and media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hearings will be devoted to the merits of the case and will include the examination of witnesses and an expert called by the Parties,\u201d the ICJ said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Filed by The Gambia to the UN\u2019s top court in 2019, the case accuses authorities in Myanmar of violating the UN genocide convention during a brutal crackdown by the country\u2019s army and Buddhist militias on the Rohingya in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>More than 742,000 Rohingya fled the bloodshed, while witnesses reported murders, rape and entire villages burned to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the ICJ, which rules on disputes between countries, ordered Myanmar in 2020 to \u201ctake all measures within its power\u201d to prevent a genocide.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4185960\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4185960\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4185960\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/getty_694628ba7f-1766205626.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C517&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"COX'S BAZAR, BANGLADESH - JANUARY 23: People watch the ICJ hearing at a restaurant in a Rohingya refugee camp on January 23, 2020 in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. Now, we are preparing for the oral hearing on the merits in this case, which the court has scheduled for mid-January 2026,\u201d Jallow said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Gambia will present its case as to why Myanmar is responsible for the Rohingya genocide and must make reparations to its victims,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Wai Wai Nu, executive director of the Women\u2019s Peace Network-Myanmar, told Al Jazeera in September that the number of countries that have intervened in support of The Gambia\u2019s case at the ICJ is \u201cactually very powerful\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey could come together and do something to stop ongoing atrocities in Rakhine State,\u201d where armed violence against the Rohingya is ongoing, Wai Wai Nu said, adding that the UN Security Council could also take action without waiting for the ICJ.<\/p>\n<p>About one million Rohingya lived in Myanmar prior to 2017 \u2013 making up a small percentage of the country\u2019s population of 55 million people \u2013 and entire communities fled across the neighbouring border into Bangladesh as the military campaign of ethnic cleansing ramped up.<\/p>\n<p>Now, more than one million Rohingya live in the world\u2019s largest refugee camp in Cox\u2019s Bazar, across the border in Bangladesh, which has been pressing for other governments to step in and shoulder the burden of hosting vast numbers of refugees.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the refugees have been living in impoverished conditions in the camp for years, while others have faced perilous journeys on boats in a bid to reach other countries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Witnesses from Myanmar\u2019s Rohingya community will also address closed-door ICJ hearing.
