{"id":6216,"date":"2025-12-22T12:36:47","date_gmt":"2025-12-22T12:36:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=6216"},"modified":"2025-12-22T12:36:47","modified_gmt":"2025-12-22T12:36:47","slug":"australian-pm-apologises-over-bondi-attack-calls-for-tougher-hate-laws-gun-violence-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=6216","title":{"rendered":"Australian PM apologises over Bondi attack, calls for tougher hate laws | Gun Violence News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead\"><em>PM Anthony Albanese is also pushing for stricter gun legislation in the wake of the nation\u2019s worst mass shooting in decades.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>Australia\u2019s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has apologised to the Jewish community over last week\u2019s Bondi Beach attack, which killed 15 people at a Hanukkah ceremony, and called for stricter laws against hate speech and hardline violence.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Monday, a week after Australia\u2019s deadliest mass shooting in decades rocked the nation, Albanese promised steps to protect Jewish Australians.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>\u201cAs prime minister, I feel the weight of responsibility for an atrocity that happened whilst I\u2019m prime minister, and I\u2019m sorry for what the Jewish community and our nation as a whole has experienced,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Albanese pledged that his government would work to protect Jewish Australians and their right \u201cto practise their faith, to educate their children and to engage in Australian society\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"planned-meticulously\">Attack planned \u2018meticulously\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Australian authorities continue to investigate the December 14 attack, whose victims included a 10-year-old girl and a Holocaust survivor, as an act of \u201cterrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Police believe suspects Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed, 24, were inspired by ISIL (ISIS), saying the group\u2019s flags were found in a car they drove.<\/p>\n<p>While Sajid was shot dead by police, Naveed is still recovering from his bullet injuries in hospital and has been charged with 59 offences, including murder and terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>In a court filing, police said the men recorded videos condemning \u201cZionists\u201d and explained \u201ctheir motivation for the \u2018Bondi attack&#8217;\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The suspects are believed to have spent months \u201cmeticulously\u201d planning the attack, including carrying out \u201cfirearms training\u201d in the New South Wales countryside, according to the court documents.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4189368\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4189368\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4189368\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2025-12-22T060608Z_1098180776_RC2ILIA2IRLN_RTRMADP_3_AUSTRALIA-CRIME-1766387968.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C431&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Sajid Akram, one of the suspects in the shooting during a Jewish Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach on December 14, conducting firearms training at a location suspected to be in New South Wales, Australia, in this still image taken from a court document released December 22, 2025. We won\u2019t let them divide our society, and we\u2019ll get through this together,\u201d Albanese said in his remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUrgency and unity is what we need,\u201d he said and called for bipartisan support for \u201ccreating an aggravated offence for hate preaching\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Albanese, whose approval ratings appear to have suffered since the attack, has also proposed far-reaching reforms on gun legislation, despite Australia already having some of the strictest limits in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The government of New South Wales, the state where Bondi Beach lies, sought to introduce strict new draft gun laws on Monday, as well as a ban on displaying \u201cterrorist\u201d symbols.<\/p>\n<p>The new rules would cap the number of guns an individual can own to four, or 10 for exempted individuals like farmers.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities would also be able to prohibit protests for up to three months following an incident deemed \u201cterrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The reforms are expected to pass parliament this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t pretend that the world is the same as it was before that terrorist incident on Sunday,\u201d New South Wales Premier Chris Minns told reporters. \u201cI\u2019d give anything to go back a week, a month, two years, to ensure that didn\u2019t happen, but we need to make sure that we take steps so that it never happens again.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PM Anthony Albanese is also pushing for stricter gun legislation in the wake of the nation\u2019s worst mass shooting in decades.
