Not even with an argument about international security,\u201d they said. \u201cThe\u00a0US shall not take over Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nielson wrote separately on Facebook that the US moves \u201cmay sound big, but it does not change anything for us\u201d. \u201cWe decide our own future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Frederiksen added in an Instagram post, \u201cIt is a difficult situation that our allies for a lifetime are putting us in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Monday, Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he would summon US envoy Kenneth Howery to express his country\u2019s deep anger over Landry\u2019s appointment. Rasmussen also called the governor\u2019s comments on annexing Greenland \u201ctotally unacceptable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration also put further pressure on Copenhagen on Monday, when it suspended leases for five large offshore wind projects being built off the East Coast of the US, including two being developed by Denmark\u2019s state-controlled Orsted.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union, meanwhile, swiftly rallied behind Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa declared \u201cfull solidarity\u201d with Copenhagen and emphasised that\u00a0\u201cterritorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has repeatedly declared that the US \u201cneeds\u201d the resource-rich island and declined to rule out the use of military force to secure it. The self-governing territory, which lies between Europe and North America, hosts a key US ballistic missile defence system and has substantial mineral deposits, which could reduce US reliance on Chinese exports.<\/p>\n<p>According to an opinion poll conducted in January, the vast majority of Greenland\u2019s 57,000 people want to become independent from Denmark, but they do not wish to become part of the US.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US president cites national security as rationale for his efforts to take control of the self-governing Arctic island.
