With Hasina\u2019s Awami League barred from contesting the February 12 vote, the BNP now appears positioned to dominate the race.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-defining-political-moment\" data-start=\"1679\" data-end=\"2030\">\u2018A defining political moment\u2019<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2032\" data-end=\"2228\">BNP leaders say they are coordinating security arrangements with authorities for what they call an \u201cunprecedented\u201d mobilisation, with supporters expected to line the route from the airport to the reception venue.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2444\" data-end=\"2582\">\u201cThis will be a defining political moment,\u201d senior BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2584\" data-end=\"2892\">Rahman has lived in London since 2008 after facing multiple criminal convictions in Bangladesh, including money laundering and charges linked to an alleged plot to assassinate Hasina. Courts acquitted him following Hasina\u2019s removal from office, removing the legal obstacles that had delayed his return.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2894\" data-end=\"3005\">BNP officials said Rahman will proceed directly from the airport to the rally venue before visiting his mother, who has been seriously ill for months.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3007\" data-end=\"3260\">The homecoming unfolds during a fragile transition overseen by an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. The election is seen as a critical test of Bangladesh\u2019s ability to restore democratic legitimacy after years of political turmoil.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3262\" data-end=\"3410\">Concerns persist over sporadic violence and recent attacks on media outlets, raising questions about the state\u2019s capacity to ensure a credible vote.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3412\" data-end=\"3532\">The National Citizen Party (NCP), which emerged from the youth protest movement that toppled Hasina, welcomed Rahman\u2019s return.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3534\" data-end=\"3823\">\u201cRahman was forced into exile under severe pressure and threats, so his homecoming carries symbolic weight,\u201d said NCP spokesperson Khan Muhammad Mursalin. \u201cHis arrival will undoubtedly energise party leaders and supporters \u2026 On the path to democracy, we will stand with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BNP plans historic rally as Rahman, seen as a key leader, marks his highly anticipated homecoming.
