It was a symbolic act of resilience as the doctors, calling themselves the \u201cHumanity Cohort\u201d, completed their Palestinian Board certifications under extraordinary circumstances after two years of Israel\u2019s war.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p class=\"p1\">The graduates had studied and sat for examinations while working nonstop inside Gaza\u2019s hospitals during two years of starvation, displacement and genocide. Some were also injured, arrested or had family members killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Gaza Health Ministry official Youssef Abu al-Reish described the ceremony as graduation from \u201cthe womb of suffering, under bombardment, among rubble and rivers of blood\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Dr Mohammed Abu Salmiya, al-Shifa\u2019s medical director, said Israel sought to destroy Palestine\u2019s human capital throughout its attacks on healthcare facilities, \u201cbut it failed in that\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Dr Ahmed Basil, one of the graduates, said earning advanced degrees in the most difficult of times inside a destroyed building sent a message that Palestinians love life and remain committed to scientific advancement.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony included empty chairs displaying photographs of healthcare workers killed during the war.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4196310\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4196310\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4196310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/AA-20251225-40075753-40075731-GRADUATION_CEREMONY_HELD_FOR_170_DOCTORS_IN_GAZA-1766735890.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C548&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Gaza doctors\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4196310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Palestinian doctors who lost their lives in Israeli attacks were commemorated during the graduation ceremony held at al-Shifa Hospital\u00a0 [Saeed M M T Jaras\/Anadolu Agency]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"an-empty-shell-with-human-graves\">\u2018An empty shell with human graves\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Al-Shifa Medical Complex has been repeatedly targeted since Israel\u2019s genocidal war began in October 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">The facility was invaded twice, first in November 2023, when Abu Salmiya himself was arrested and detained for seven months, and again in March 2024, when the complex suffered catastrophic destruction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">A World Health Organization assessment conducted in early April 2024 found the hospital had been reduced to what WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DrTedros\/status\/1776617140969168918\">described<\/a> as \u201can empty shell with human graves\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">The hospital has since been partially renovated but still largely lies in ruins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">The destruction of al-Shifa exemplifies a broader systematic campaign against Gaza\u2019s healthcare system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Of the territory\u2019s 36 hospitals, only 18 remain even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ochaopt.org\/content\/reported-impact-snapshot-gaza-strip-23-december-2025\">partially functional<\/a> as of mid-December, with all but three field hospitals operating under severe limitations. More than 18,500 critically ill patients, including 4,000 children, require medical evacuation that remains largely inaccessible.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"hospitals-attacked-medics-killed\">Hospitals attacked, medics killed<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">The WHO Health Cluster has <a href=\"https:\/\/app.powerbi.com\/view?r=eyJrIjoiODAxNTYzMDYtMjQ3YS00OTMzLTkxMWQtOTU1NWEwMzE5NTMwIiwidCI6ImY2MTBjMGI3LWJkMjQtNGIzOS04MTBiLTNkYzI4MGFmYjU5MCIsImMiOjh9\">documented<\/a> 825 attacks on healthcare facilities since October 2023. These attacks have killed 985 people and injured approximately 2,000 others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, 1,722 healthcare workers have been killed in Israeli strikes over the past two years. An additional 306 individuals have been detained over the course of the war, many of whom have since been released, according to the WHO Health Cluster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">At least five healthcare workers have died while in detention, with other released detainees, and the corpses of people returned showing signs of torture and abuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">The UN Human Rights Office has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/20241231-attacks-hospitals-gaza-en.pdf\">identified<\/a> a consistent pattern in Israeli operations against hospitals. Initial air strikes and shelling, followed by ground troop sieges that prevent access, then raids employing heavy machinery, including tanks and bulldozers, mass detentions of medical staff and patients, forced evacuations, and finally withdrawal, leaving facilities non-functional.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Palestinian human rights organisation Al-Haq has documented what it characterises as the \u201csystematic destruction\u201d of Gaza\u2019s healthcare system as a genocidal pattern.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, 70,942 Palestinians have been killed and 171,195 injured since 7 October 2023. Since a ceasefire was announced this October, 406 people have been killed and 1,118 injured, with the ministry noting that violations continue.
