The remains of the Libyan officials will be transported back home, where an official funeral will be held.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft carrying the Libyan delegation went down on Tuesday<span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"> shortly after taking off<\/span> from Ankara, following what Libyan officials said was a technical malfunction. All those on board, including three crew members, were killed.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Haddad, Libya\u2019s highest-ranking military officer, was a key figure in the United Nations-brokered efforts to unify the country\u2019s divided armed forces. His death drew condolences even from the rival factions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaddad was this strong, charismatic leader who always [sought] peace in the country,\u201d said Al Jazeera\u2019s Malik Traina, reporting from al-Haddad\u2019s hometown of Misrata, Libya. \u201cHe was a man of peace, well-respected across the country, even among people he fought against.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khalifa Haftar, head of eastern Libya\u2019s rival administration \u2013 whose forces al-Haddad opposed during a 2019 advance on western Libya \u2013 was among those who extended sympathies.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Haftar expressed \u201cdeep sorrow over this tragic loss\u201d and offered condolences to al-Haddad\u2019s family, tribe, and city, as well as \u201cto all the Libyan people\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"big-shoes-to-fill\">\u2018Big shoes to fill\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Following the ceremony in Turkiye, five coffins draped in Libyan national flags were loaded onto a plane for repatriation to Libya. Turkiye\u2019s military chief Bayraktaroglu was also on the plane, state-run news agency TRT reported.<\/p>\n<p>Libya plunged into chaos after the country\u2019s 2011 uprising toppled and killed longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi. The country is split, with rival administrations in the east and the west, backed by an array of rogue militias and different foreign governments.<\/p>\n<p>Turkiye has been the main backer of Libya\u2019s government in the west, but has recently taken steps to improve ties with the eastern-based administration as well.<\/p>\n<p>Traina said it will be \u201cextremely difficult\u201d for Libya\u2019s Western government \u201cto find someone as respected\u201d to replace al-Haddad, who had chaired a United Nations-backed truce committee. \u201cThey are extremely big shoes to fill.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler and military chief Selcuk Bayraktaroglu attend ceremony at an airbase near Ankara.
