{"id":6858,"date":"2025-12-29T15:18:25","date_gmt":"2025-12-29T15:18:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=6858"},"modified":"2025-12-29T15:18:25","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T15:18:25","slug":"thailand-cambodia-agree-to-build-on-ceasefire-in-talks-in-chinas-yunnan-conflict-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=6858","title":{"rendered":"Thailand, Cambodia agree to build on ceasefire in talks in China\u2019s Yunnan | Conflict News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead\"><em>Countries meet for a second day of negotiations after a truce agreed on Saturday to halt weeks of fighting.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>Thailand and Cambodia \u200dplan to rebuild \u200dmutual trust and consolidate a ceasefire, Beijing says at the end of two days of talks in southwestern China, despite new accusations from the Thai military that its Cambodian counterparts are violating the truce with drone flights.<\/p>\n<p>The foreign ministers of Thailand and Cambodia met with the Chinese foreign minister in Yunnan province on Monday for the scheduled two days of talks aimed at ending weeks of fierce fighting along their border that has killed more than 100 people and displaced more than half a million civilians in both countries.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 4 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>The talks, billed as a \u201cmutual confidence\u201d building initiative aimed at restoring \u201cpeace, security and stability\u201d along the border, were held after both sides agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday, freezing troop positions at their current locations.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the deal, Thailand has agreed to return 18 captured Cambodian soldiers on Tuesday if the ceasefire, which took effect at noon (05:00 GMT) on Saturday, is fully observed.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"positive-direction\">\u2018Positive direction\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said he believed the parties were \u201cmoving in a positive direction\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t resolved everything, but I think we are making progress in the right direction, and we have to keep up the momentum,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, speaking to Cambodian state TVK, said he believed the latest ceasefire would last and provide an environment for the neighbours to resolve their differences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to return to the past, which means that no one wants to see this fighting happening again. Therefore, what is important is that this ceasefire is to be permanent and must be firmly respected and implemented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released by his ministry, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the discussions had been \u201cbeneficial and constructive and an important consensus was reached\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A joint communique released by China\u2019s official Xinhua news agency said Bangkok and Phnom Penh would \u201crebuild political mutual trust, achieve a turnaround in relations and maintain regional peace\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"thailand-alleges-violations\">Thailand alleges violations<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the positive statements from the talks, Thailand\u2019s military on Monday accused Cambodia of violating the ceasefire by flying hundreds of drones over its territory, warning it may reconsider the scheduled release of the 18 Cambodian soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>The Thai army said in a statement that \u201cmore than 250\u201d drones were detected \u201cintruding into Thailand\u2019s sovereign territory\u201d on Sunday night, calling the incident a \u201cprovocation\u201d, a \u201cviolation of measures aimed at reducing tensions\u201d and inconsistent with Saturday\u2019s agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand\u2019s army \u201cmay need to reconsider its decision regarding the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers, depending on the situation and the behaviour observed\u201d, the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks aired on Cambodian state television, Sokhonn described the incident as \u201ca small issue related to flying drones seen by both sides along the border line\u201d, adding that the two countries had discussed it and agreed to investigate and \u201cresolve it immediately\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"border-area-deserted\">Border area deserted<\/h2>\n<p>Along with the pledge to return the Cambodian soldiers, the two sides also agreed in Saturday\u2019s truce to cooperate on demining efforts and combating cybercrime and to allow civilians living in border areas to return home as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>An Al Jazeera team has been able to gain exclusive access to one such border area where Thai forces had advanced into Cambodian territory in the border province of Banteay Meanchey.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting from the border, Al Jazeera\u2019s Assed Baig said the guns had fallen silent since Saturday\u2019s agreement but the area remained littered with shrapnel and unexploded ordnance.<\/p>\n<p>He said villages had been deserted by civilians and some residents appeared to have tried to dig their own bunkers before the hostilities drew too close and forced them to flee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are afraid to return or come close to the border,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Baig said that although the ceasefire was holding, there has been no resolution yet to the deeper causes of the conflict, rooted in territorial disputes along the neighbours\u2019 800km (500-mile) border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the longer the guns remain silent, the greater the chance this fragile calm can turn into lasting peace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Countries meet for a second day of negotiations after a truce agreed on Saturday to halt weeks of fighting.
