{"id":758,"date":"2025-11-01T03:50:48","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T03:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=758"},"modified":"2025-11-01T03:50:48","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T03:50:48","slug":"g7-slams-russian-attacks-on-energy-as-ukraine-decries-nuclear-terrorism-european-union-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=758","title":{"rendered":"G7 slams Russian attacks on energy as Ukraine decries \u2018nuclear terrorism\u2019 | European Union News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead\"><em>The group said Russian attacks are inflicting \u2018devastating social, environmental, and economic consequences\u2019 on Ukraine.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>The energy ministers of the Group of Seven nations (G7) have issued a joint statement condemning Russia\u2019s attacks on Ukraine\u2019s energy system, after authorities in Kyiv described Moscow\u2019s most recent barrage as akin to \u201cnuclear terrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a Friday statement, the G7 energy ministers \u2013 representing Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States \u2013 said Russia\u2019s attacks \u201ccontinue to inflict devastating social, environmental, and economic consequences on the Ukrainian people\u201d.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>\u201cRussia\u2019s recent attacks on Ukraine\u2019s natural gas infrastructure have created risks to communities and human lives, weakening civilian infrastructure and the energy security of the Ukrainian people,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>The G7 statement said it continues to support the reconstruction of Ukraine\u2019s energy sector \u201cthrough direct financial assistance, credit facilities, risk insurance, policy and resource alignment, as well as setting conditions for long-term private sector investment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Over recent weeks, Ukraine has accused Russia of repeatedly attacking critical civilian energy infrastructure ahead of the bitterly cold winter months in order to inflict suffering on its population.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said Moscow\u2019s \u201cgoal is to plunge Ukraine into darkness\u201d, after a wave of Russian attacks hit energy facilities in central, western, and southeastern regions of the country on Thursday, killing seven people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia continues its systematic energy terror \u2013 striking at the lives, dignity, and warmth of Ukrainians on the eve of winter,\u201d Svyrydenko said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo stop the terror, we need more air defence systems, tougher sanctions, and maximum pressure on the aggressor,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Ukraine\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced what it said were \u201ctargeted strikes\u201d by Russian forces on substations critical to supplying external power for Ukraine\u2019s nuclear power stations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeliberate strikes on civilian energy facilities that directly affect the safe operation of nuclear installations bear the hallmarks of nuclear terrorism and constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Kyiv announced nationwide limits on electricity supplies to retail and industrial consumers following Thursday\u2019s attacks, while water supplies and heating were also disrupted in some regions.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations\u2019 International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also said three Ukrainian nuclear power plants were forced to reduce output due to the assault.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dangers to nuclear safety continue to be very real and ever-present,\u201d IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi warned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI once again call for maximum military restraint in the vicinity of nuclear facilities,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow denies it targets civilians. It claims its strikes are simply a response to Ukraine\u2019s attacks on Russian civilian infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow and Kyiv regularly accuse each other of targeting one another\u2019s energy sites, as well as engaging in military activity that compromises safety at Ukraine\u2019s four working nuclear plants.<\/p>\n<p>The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, seized by Russian forces in the early weeks of Moscow\u2019s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, has become a prime concern for the IAEA as fighting rages nearby.<\/p>\n<p>On October 23, the Russian-installed administration of Zaporizhia said it had repaired a damaged high-voltage line and restored external power to the plant.<\/p>\n<p>It had been without external electricity for 30 days and relying on backup diesel generators since September 23, when\u00a0its last remaining external power line was severed in attacks that each side blamed on the other.<\/p>\n<p>Europe\u2019s largest nuclear plant, with six reactors, Zaporizhzhia, currently produces no electricity, but needs external power to cool the nuclear fuel and avoid any catastrophic nuclear incidents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The group said Russian attacks are inflicting \u2018devastating social, environmental, and economic consequences\u2019 on Ukraine.
