{"id":7601,"date":"2026-01-05T20:26:47","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T20:26:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=7601"},"modified":"2026-01-05T20:26:47","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T20:26:47","slug":"israeli-settlers-consume-seven-times-more-water-than-palestinians-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=7601","title":{"rendered":"Israeli settlers consume seven times more water than Palestinians | Water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead\"><em>Water expert Jad Isaac tells Al Jazeera that Palestinians are trapped buying 100 million cubic metres (26 billion gallons) of water annually from Israel while their own springs are seized to force displacement.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">In the eastern occupied West Bank, the al-Auja spring has flowed for centuries, serving as one of the largest and oldest water basins in Palestine.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">But Palestinian families who have relied on it for generations say Israeli settlers are effectively stealing the water, creating a crisis that experts are calling \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/aje.io\/4qnxp\">water apartheid<\/a>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">An Israeli settlement outpost now stands between the villagers of <a href=\"https:\/\/aje.io\/l1u1ic\">al-Auja<\/a> and their water source. Residents report that settlers have fenced off the area and installed pumps that siphon water directly from the aquifer, leaving Palestinian pipes dry.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">\u201cThe settlers banned us,\u201d Salama Kaabneh, the mukhtar (chief) of the Kaabneh clan, told Al Jazeera Arabic\u2019s Givara Budeiri. \u201cThere is a motor pulling water from the same basin \u2026 800 metres [2,625 feet] deeper than the spring\u2019s opening.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"exclusive-a-systemic-imbalance\">A systemic imbalance<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\">In an interview with Al Jazeera, Jad Isaac, director of the Applied Research Institute-Jerusalem (ARIJ), revealed the staggering scale of inequality created by Israeli military control over water resources.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\">\u201cThe Israeli settler consumes approximately seven times the amount of water a Palestinian citizen gets,\u201d Isaac said.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13\">\u201cThe Palestinian individual\u2019s share does not exceed 80 litres [21 gallons] per day,\u201d he explained, noting that in some marginalised communities, that drops to below 15 litres [4 gallons] \u2013\u00a0 \u201cfar below the global minimum recommendation of 100 litres per day\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14\">This inequality is visible from the sky. Drone footage obtained by the Reuters news agency reveals withered, brown Palestinian greenhouses sitting adjacent to lush, green settlement agriculture that thrives on the seized water.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"oslo-trap\">The \u2018Oslo trap\u2019<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16\">With their natural springs seized or blocked, Palestinians have fallen into what Isaac describes as a \u201ctrap\u201d set by the <a href=\"https:\/\/aje.io\/4n1uba\">Oslo Accords<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"17\">\u201cIsrael refused to negotiate on Palestinian water rights \u2026 replacing the issue by demanding Palestinians submit their needs to the Israeli side, which then sells it to them,\u201d Isaac said.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"18\">He noted that the Palestinian Authority is now forced to purchase more than 100 million cubic metres (26 billion gallons) of water annually at market price from Israeli companies\u2014effectively buying back their own natural resources.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"19\">Isaac said that under military orders, Israel has taken \u201cfull control\u201d of water sources, citing recent moves to establish a \u201ccrimson wall\u201d in the northern Jordan Valley to further separate Palestinian communities from their agricultural lands.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"slow-displacement\">\u2018Slow displacement\u2019<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"21\">Rights groups warn that this engineered thirst is a strategic method to force Palestinians to abandon their homes.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"22\">According to data provided by ARIJ to Al Jazeera, more than 56 water springs in the West Bank have been subjected to repeated settler attacks or takeovers.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"23\">\u201cThe seizure of springs \u2026 indicates a clear shift from merely controlling resources to using water as a direct pressure tool on the population,\u201d Isaac warned.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"24\">\u201cMany families are pushed into internal or external migration due to the loss of livelihoods, which constitutes a slow displacement of rural Palestinian communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"we-have-returned-to-the-wells\">\u2018We have returned to the wells\u2019<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"26\">The seizure of water resources appears to have explicit backing from the Israeli government.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"27\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IhabHassane\/status\/2001026989486977101\">video<\/a> circulating widely online, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has praised settlers for taking physical control of the springs.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"28\">\u201cI see the results of your wonderful work. We have returned to the water wells and regained control over all these areas,\u201d Smotrich is heard saying in the viral clip. \u201cIt is a pleasure to tour here.
