I assume that we [Denmark and Greenland] share certain common values and policies that both countries stand by,\u201d Motzfeldt said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if she would prefer to hold next week\u2019s meeting with Rubio without her Danish counterpart, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Motzfeldt refused to comment and stressed that the talks will be held jointly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreenland has been working toward statehood, which would require us to conduct our own foreign policy. But we are not there yet. Until then, we have certain laws and frameworks that we must follow,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The planned discussions come as US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he wants to take over Greenland \u2013 a self-governing territory of Denmark \u2013 in remarks that have roiled European leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has hailed the island\u2019s \u201cstrategic\u201d importance in the Arctic region and accused the Danish authorities of failing to adequately secure the waters around Greenland \u2013 a claim rejected by local politicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want Russia or China going to Greenland, which \u2013 if we don\u2019t take Greenland \u2013 you\u2019re going to have Russia or China as your next-door neighbour. That\u2019s not going to happen,\u201d he told reporters in the White House on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration also has refused to rule out using military force to seize Greenland, telling reporters this week that \u201call options\u201d remain on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Recent US attacks on Venezuela and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collinsdictionary.com\/dictionary\/english\/abduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the abduction<\/a> of the South American country\u2019s president, Nicolas Maduro, have spurred heightened concerns around what Trump may be planning for Greenland.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"future-of-nato\">Future of NATO<\/h2>\n<p>Rubio held talks with NATO chief Mark Rutte on Friday as the transatlantic military alliance has sought to deflect Washington\u2019s interest in Greenland by emphasising efforts to boost security in the Arctic.<\/p>\n<p>A NATO spokesperson said Rutte spoke with Rubio \u201con the importance of the Arctic to our shared security and how NATO is working to enhance our capabilities in the High North\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that an armed US attack to take Greenland could spell the end for NATO.<\/p>\n<p>But the head of NATO\u2019s forces in Europe, US General Alexus Grynkewich, said earlier in the day that the alliance was far from being in \u201ca crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been no impact on my work at the military level up to this point \u2026 I would just say that we\u2019re ready to defend every inch of alliance territory still today,\u201d Grynkewich told reporters during a visit to Finland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I see us as far from being in a crisis right now,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Motzfeldt, Greenland\u2019s foreign minister, also said she had \u201cgood expectations\u201d for the upcoming meeting with Rubio but underlined that it is \u201ctoo early to say how it will end\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom our side, it is clear that Greenland needs the United States, and the United States needs Greenland.
