{"id":8512,"date":"2026-01-13T22:54:48","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T22:54:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=8512"},"modified":"2026-01-13T22:54:48","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T22:54:48","slug":"us-labels-muslim-brotherhood-in-egypt-lebanon-jordan-as-terrorists-muslim-brotherhood-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inernews.online\/?p=8512","title":{"rendered":"US labels Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan as \u2018terrorists\u2019 | Muslim Brotherhood News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p><strong>Washington, DC<\/strong> \u2013 The United States has designated Muslim Brotherhood organisations in Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan as \u201cterrorist\u201d groups, as Washington intensifies its crackdown on Israel\u2019s rivals across the world.<\/p>\n<p>The decision on Tuesday came weeks after President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing his administration to start the process of blacklisting the groups.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>The US Department of the Treasury labelled the groups in Jordan and Egypt as \u201cspecially designated global terrorists\u201d, and the State Department blacklisted the Lebanese organisation with a more serious designation \u2013 \u201cforeign terrorist organization\u201d (FTO).<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration cited alleged support for the Palestinian group Hamas and \u201cactivities against Israeli interests in the Middle East\u201d as the reason behind targeting the Muslim Brotherhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChapters of the Muslim Brotherhood purport to be legitimate civic organisations while, behind the scenes, they explicitly and enthusiastically support terrorist groups like Hamas,\u201d the US Treasury said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Salah Abdel Haq, acting general guide of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, said the group \u201ccategorically rejects this designation and will pursue all legal avenues to challenge this decision which harms millions of Muslims worldwide\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Abdel Haq suggested on Tuesday that pressure from Israel and the United Arab Emirates in Washington drove the Trump administration\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe deny all allegations that the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood has directed, funded, provided material support for or engaged in terrorism,\u201d he told Al Jazeera in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis designation is unsupported by credible evidence and reflects external foreign pressure by the UAE and Israel rather than an objective assessment of US interests or facts on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"washington-s-designations-make-it-illegal-to-provide-material-support-to-the-groups-they-also-impose-economic-sanctions-to-choke-the-groups-revenue-streams-the-fto-label-carries-the-added-penalty-of-banning-the-groups-members-from-entering-the-us\">Washington\u2019s designations make it illegal to provide material support to the groups. The FTO label carries the added penalty of banning the groups\u2019 members from entering the US.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-muslim-brotherhood\">The Muslim Brotherhood<\/h2>\n<p>Established in 1928 by Egyptian Muslim scholar Hassan al-Banna, the Muslim Brotherhood has offshoots and branches across the Middle East, including political parties and social organisations.<\/p>\n<p>The group and its affiliates say they are committed to peaceful political participation.<\/p>\n<p>The Muslim Brotherhood chapter in Lebanon, known\u00a0as\u00a0al-Jamaa al-Islamiya, is represented in the Lebanese Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>In Jordan, the group won 31 House of Representatives seats in the 2024 elections through its political arm, the Islamic Action Front.<\/p>\n<p>But Amman banned the organisation last year, accusing it of links to what the Jordanian government called a sabotage plot.<\/p>\n<p>The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood won the country\u2019s only democratically held presidential election in 2012. But President Mohamed Morsi was overthrown a year later in a military coup and died in jail in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Cairo has outlawed the Muslim Brotherhood and launched a sweeping crackdown against the group\u2019s leaders and members since 2013, driving the organisation underground and into exile.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Egypt\u2019s Foreign Ministry welcomed the US designation of the Egyptian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood as global \u201cterrorists\u201d and called it a \u201cpivotal step\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry in a statement that Washington\u2019s decision \u201creflects the danger of this group and its extremist ideology and the direct threat it poses to regional and international security and stability\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Muslim Brotherhood-inspired organisations in the Middle East have been vocal critics of Israel\u2019s genocidal war in Gaza within their countries.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya backed Hezbollah in its \u201csupport front\u201d in solidarity with Gaza against Israel, which culminated in an all-out war in September 2024.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the group stressed that it is a licensed Lebanese political and social movement operating openly under the law for decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis move is a political and administrative American decision, not based on any Lebanese or international judicial ruling, and has no legal effect within Lebanon, where the sole authority remains the Lebanese Constitution, the applicable laws, and the Lebanese state institutions,\u201d al-Jamaa al-Islamiya said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>It added that the US designation \u201cserves the interests of the Israeli occupation, which continues its aggressions against our country and people\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"effects-in-us\">Effects in US<\/h2>\n<p>In the US and other countries in the West, right-wing activists have for years tried to demonise Muslim immigrant communities and Israel\u2019s critics with accusations of links to the Muslim Brotherhood.<\/p>\n<p>Some of Trump\u2019s hawkish allies in Congress have been calling for blacklisting the group for years.<\/p>\n<p>After Trump issued his decree to designate the Muslim Brotherhood\u2019s branches in Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan as \u201cterrorist\u201d organisations, the Republican governors of Texas and Florida moved to crack down on the leading Muslim civil rights group in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Both states designated the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) along with the Muslim Brotherhood as \u201cterrorist\u201d groups.<\/p>\n<p>CAIR, which denies links to the Muslim Brotherhood, has sued them in response.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington, DC \u2013 The United States has designated Muslim Brotherhood organisations in Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan as \u201cterrorist\u201d groups, as Washington intensifies its crackdown on Israel\u2019s rivals across the world.
