More than 200 historical sites were destroyed by Israeli bombing in what experts called a \u201ccultural genocide\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>The new list brings the total number of Palestinian sites on the tentative list to 24, covering a vast timeline from the Canaanite city-states dating back to 3,000 BC to Gaza\u2019s Old City.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-4237632\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/HeritageSites_INTERACTIVE-Palestines-World-Heritage-Sites-1768390146.png?quality=80\" alt=\"INTERACTIVE - Palestines World Heritage Sites-1768390146\" data-interactive=\"true\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-14-submitted-sites\">The 14 submitted sites<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\">The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities confirmed the full list of sites submitted to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The list spans prehistoric caves, religious routes, and modern architecture. The list includes the Great Omari Mosque, built nearly 1,400 years ago, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/aje.io\/vit78c\">Church of Saint Porphyrius<\/a>, both targeted during Israeli bombardment. The Greek Orthodox Church was built in 425.<\/p>\n<p>Adwan described the move as a strategic step for the \u201cday after\u201d the war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListing sites like the Great Omari Mosque \u2026 is an initial international recognition of their global value and their urgent need for protection,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are counting on UNESCO not just for funding, but to document damages as an international legal source to preserve our cultural rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"heritage-is-a-bridge\">\u2018Heritage is a bridge\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The initiative has drawn a sharp response from the Israeli government, particularly regarding sites located in Area C of the West Bank, such as Herodium (Jabal al-Fureidis), which is under full Israeli military control. Area C forms more than 60 percent of the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c14.co.il\/article\/1427344\">According<\/a> to Israel\u2019s Channel 14, Israeli Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu sent an urgent letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, labeling the Palestinian move as \u201carchaeological terrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Eliyahu demanded the formation of a government task force to block the bid, arguing it is a \u201cstrategic arena for a political struggle\u201d aimed at seizing sites of \u201cJewish historical importance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLack of response will be interpreted in the international arena as silent acceptance,\u201d Eliyahu warned, claiming the move is a prelude to \u201cinternational legal interventions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has been accused of erasing Palestinian cultural heritage and weaponising archaeology to appropriate Palestinian land. It has designated dozens of Palestinian archaeological sites in the occupied West Bank as \u201cIsraeli heritage sites\u201d to grab Palestinians land and entrench its occupation.<\/p>\n<p>The UN General Assembly in September 2024 passed a resolution asking Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian within a year. The resolution came after the International Court of Justice ruled that Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories was unlawful.<\/p>\n<p>Palestinian officials have rejected the Israeli characterisation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeritage is not a weapon, but a bridge,\u201d Adwan told Al Jazeera. \u201cTrying to link heritage to security or calling it \u2018terrorism\u2019 is a deliberate distortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She noted that the files were selected based on technical criteria to highlight Palestine\u2019s religious and cultural diversity, including the \u201cMiracles of Jesus\u201d route and the Monasteries of the Jerusalem Wilderness (El-Bariyah).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis reflects a rare cultural and religious pluralism that must be preserved for all of humanity,\u201d Adwan added.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"severing-un-ties\">Severing UN ties<\/h2>\n<p>The row over heritage unfolds as Israel moves to cut ties with the United Nations system entirely.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IsraelMFA\/status\/2011119369435205875\">announced<\/a> that Israel would \u201cimmediately sever all contact\u201d with several UN bodies, including UN Women and the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, citing \u201canti-Israel bias\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Last year Israel banned the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which is considered a lifeline for Palestinians in the occupied territories as well as in neighbouring countries hosting Palestinian refugees. More than 750,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed from their homeland leading up to the creation of Israel in 1948.<\/p>\n<p>This follows a recent decision from the administration of US President Donald Trump\u00a0to withdraw from UNESCO for a second time.
