Norway, Sweden also participating to bolster security on Arctic island.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>Soldiers from France, Germany and other European countries have begun arriving in Greenland to help boost the Arctic island\u2019s security after talks involving Denmark, Greenland and the United States highlighted \u201cfundamental disagreement\u201d between President Donald Trump\u2019s administration and its European allies.<\/p>\n<p>France has already sent 15 soldiers and Germany 13. Norway and Sweden are also participating.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-on\">\n<h2 class=\"more-on__heading\">Recommended Stories<!-- --> <\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">list of 3 items<\/span><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>The mission has been described as a recognition-of-the-territory exercise with troops to plant the European Union\u2019s flag on Greenland as a symbolic act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first French military elements are already en route\u201d and \u201cothers will follow\u201d, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday as French authorities said soldiers from the country\u2019s mountain infantry unit were already in Nuuk, Greenland\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>France said the two-day mission is a way to show that EU troops can be quickly deployed if needed.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Germany\u2019s Ministry of Defence said it was deploying a reconnaissance team of 13 personnel to Greenland on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark announced its plans to increase its own military presence in Greenland on Wednesday as the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers met with White House representatives in Washington, DC, to discuss Trump\u2019s intentions to take over the semiautonomous Danish territory to tap its mineral resources amid rising Russian and Chinese interest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3570887\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3570887\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3570887\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/INTERACTIVE-Greenlands-mineral-resources-MARCH9-20250D-1741681526.png?quality=80\" alt=\"INTERACTIVE-Greenlands mineral resources-MARCH9-2025-1741681526\" data-interactive=\"true\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3570887\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Al Jazeera)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the two foreign ministers emerged from the meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance having made little progress in dissuading Washington from seeking to take over Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t manage to change the American position,\u201d Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen told reporters. \u201cIt\u2019s clear that the president has this wish of conquering over Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His Greenlandic counterpart, Vivian Motzfeldt, called for cooperation with the US but said that does not mean the country wants to be \u201cowned by the United States\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The pair announced their intent to establish a working group to continue to address concerns about control over Greenland and security in the Arctic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really need it [Greenland],\u201d Trump told reporters in the Oval Office after Wednesday\u2019s meeting. \u201cIf we don\u2019t go in, Russia is going to go in, and China is going to go in. And there\u2019s not a thing Denmark can do about it, but we can do everything about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump said he had not yet been briefed about the contents of the White House meeting when he made his remarks.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Moscow criticised \u201creferences to certain activity of Russia and China around Greenland as a reason for the current escalation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst they came up with \u200dthe idea \u2060that there were some aggressors, and then that they were ready to protect someone from these aggressors,\u201d Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said of \u200bthe West\u2019s actions \u200con Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>The current situation, she said, \u201cdemonstrates with particular acuteness the inconsistency of the so-called \u2018rules-based \u200cworld order\u2019 being built by the \u200cWest,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe stand \u2060in solidarity with China\u2019s position on the unacceptability of references to certain activity of \u200cRussia and China around Greenland as a reason for the current \u200descalation,\u201d Zakharova said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"fear-in-inuit-communities\">Fear in Inuit communities<\/h2>\n<p>The prospect of the US descending on Greenland to tap its minerals has struck fear into Inuit communities around the town of Ilulissat, perched beside an ice fjord on the western side of the island.<\/p>\n<p>Before Wednesday\u2019s meeting, Inuit Greenlander Karl Sandgreen, head of the Ilulissat Icefjord visitor centre, told Al Jazeera: \u201cMy hope is that Rubio is going to have some humanity in that talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His fears are for the Inuit way of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are totally different. We are Inuit, and we\u2019ve been living here for thousands of years.\u201d he said. \u201cThis is my daughter\u2019s and my son\u2019s future, not a future for people who are thinking about resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>France sends 15 soldiers, Germany 13.
